The fine station that spawned such fine literate adult programming as ROME AND SOPRANOS has left me aghast! How on earth could you possibly cancel DEADWOOD? I am not alone with this question! If it is to become the norm of HBO to ‘tease’ you with quality programming only to have the rug pulled out from under you as you anxiously await the next episode, then I too can cancel HBO. Extreme? No! Its whats referred to as the economies of scales…..if I, and everyone that I know cancels…..then, everyone that knows them cancels…………

Doesn’t surprise. I typed ‘Deadwood season 4’ in google coz I had an overwhelming feeling that it would be cancelled by then. Its too REAL to be liked mainstream… Or so HBO thinks.
The whole situation is very remenicent of Fox’s ridiculous decision to cancel Joss Whedon’s Firefly. They thought no one would like Firefly so they never gave it a chance. Yet almost everyone who has actually seen the show (in the right ORDER which Fox couldn’t seem to get right, they aired them all over the place) LOVES it. Like Deadwood, Firefly dealt with human emotions, feelings and moral decision etc. that most shows have no intrest in showing.
It seems to be that if someone creates a show that requires its audience to have a BRAIN then the networks can’t see a need for it.
So heres a big hardy F**K YOU, C**KSUCKERS to HBO and Fox. Maybe they should get into bed together and ruin TV completely.

Yeah So far I’ve sent HBO and both the president and CEO a little of my mind. I didn’t get into the first two seasons, but coworkers had me check out the 3rd…i was addicted. SUCH a good show. Best show i’ve seen in a LONG time…i watch a full season, get ready to buy the first two, and HBO bitches cancel the contracts of all the cast. Well I guess you have gone and done it. Cancelled one of the best shows ever. Everyone I have met that has even seen one episode of deadwood has clammered to see the rest. Fact, fiction or whatever it was the show has given us all a new insight of the wild wild west that others were afraid to portray. Since I have been watching deadwood, I have put it on my agenda to stop there in my travels. The dirty cocksuckers that have agreed to cancel the show should be fed to Wu’s pigs.

HBO is nearing a deal with Deadwood creator-executive producer David Milch to lock up the western for another go-round, several months before the third season hits the air, reports Variety.
Production, in fact, is still under way on season three’s 12-episode batch, which is slated to premiere in June.
The premiere had originally been scheduled for March, but was pushed back to make room for the new dramedy Big Love, about a polygamist, played by Bill Paxton, and his wives.
HBO executives are hoping to give “Love” a boost by pairing it with the network’s strongest lead-in: the hotly anticipated sixth season bow of The Sopranos.

Watched the series three final last night and now wonder what could possibly ever come close to a show like Deadwood.I picked it up middle of series one, got everyone I knew to give it a try and by the middle of series three there was nothing else happening in town during the ‘Deadwood Hour’.TV has never been this good, and by the looks, may never be again.

I’ve never pitched a program to so many people and personally got more than a dozen people to sign up for HBO . . . all because of Deadwood. i’m sure that there are legions of fans out there to have done the same thing. I cancelled HBO as soon as I learned of this and recommended that my friends do likewise. Deadwood was so much more gritty and realistic than most westerns. I recently saw broken trail and although I respect Robert Duvall, I had to laugh my ass off at the corney scenes. Deadwood was so real, and yes it took an attention span to follow what was going on. What a shame and a sham.

What a total bloody disappointment.
I’m in the UK and been glued to the screen with every single episode along with many friends. The script is just so brilliant, it’s mesmerising. It’s one of the most intelligent pieces of writing to come out of HBO. Why does eveything have to be ‘dumbed down’ as if the audience cannot cope with having to use their brains?
HBO has definitely gone down in my estimations as a quality channel after such an awful decision to axe Deadwood.

I can’t believe that Deadwood is cancelled, the best show HBO has ever aired. We will be cancelling HBO because it was the primary reason we kept it was to watch Deadwood. We even purchased season 1 & 2 on DVD with hopes of purchasing the future seasons just to watch them again in future years. I have been going to the HBO Deadwood website since the 3rd season ended to see when the next season would start. My husband and I are very disappointed about this decision as are several of our friends who used to watch it. From the responses on this decision It sounds like HBO could loose alot of viewers.

I thought the ending for #3 was somewhat disappointing, but I figured it was intended to lead into the next season. Now, considering the show will end you writer(s) could of at least concluded the series in a more satisfying episode. Unfortunately for me, the first time I caught an episode of Deadwood was during season two and I knew none of the characters. I didn’t pick up on the storyline quick enough and passed the show off as a chain of constant obscenities with very little to offer. I cannot believe how incredibly wrong I was. A friend recommended that I start from the beginning and watch through. After watching the first episode I was hooked.. DEEPLY hooked. Before I knew it my wallet contained receipts for seasons one and two on DVD and my wife and I were staying up wayyyy too late to watch “just one more episode…” I am of the opinion that Deadwood is the second best series ever captured on film for television or any other media. First being another HBO hit; “Band of Brothers”. David Milch’s apparent refusal to dumb the show down for the masses has made it an absolute masterpiece. The subtle coolness of the series is what I love most about it…

I am so beyond let down. HBO produces one of the greatest television shows ever, which helps create new accounts for their pockets, then rips it away from it’s salivating awaiting customers. I’m so disgusted with the thought of not seeing a “Deadwood” season four, five, and six, that I wrote to them @ HBO.com and said I would cancel my subscription to their channel if it’s not brought back. The thought of two movies giving closure to this series, after getting so many people addicted to this TV delicacy is enough to boycott a channel that would make such a stupid decision.
I mean they will let James Gandolfini extort them to raise salaries for the entire cast of “Sopranos” (you didn’t think we forgot, did you?) and leaves this supremely written and executed show incomplete, that really pisses me off. Dissapointment is the only feeling that comes to me upon hearing that a show as complete as that of Deadwood had been is to be cancelled. This show meant so much to me and that of my friends. We’d get together and watch every damn episode. Never have I seen characters that were so deep in breadth from the good to bad and everything in between. I loved the fact that I actually had to pay attention to know what the hell was going on. I mean what shows do that these days. As far as I could tell there was only 1 and now it is cancelled. This show was an artistic masterpiece beyond comparison. I am ashamed to say that a premium channel with such renowned history as HBO could make a blunder so huge as this and remove the only great story worth watching. With that, all I am left with is dissapointment.

I just saw the final episode of season 3. It was very anticlimactic, almost as if it was rushed. There is so much potential for the characters and plot to continue into a 4th season. What about Wu and Al’s retainers? What of Calamity Jane and Wyatt Earp? What about Sofia? What about the first motor carriage?

I fully agree with everything said and want to say as a viewer from the begining of the series and since episode 3 of season 2 the host of 6 friends on a Monday night to watch Deadwood I was shocked to get on the net as the credits are rolling on “Tell Me Something Pretty” that there would be no more.
I have emailed Chris and Carolyn at HBO and 2 other friends who can are going to to register their hatred of the execs who seem to have forgotten that the little people pay their wages.
Tell me something pretty. FUCK why not just name the episode “Eat shit you turkeys who support us at hbo”

I have just been watching the series recently and am quite disappointed that someone finally creates a show that takes brainpower to watch and the braindead execs at HBO cancel it. We need challenging shows like this to keep us people from getting lazy brain. Great plot, great acting and incredibly entertaining with a historical twist. So sad, the show was fantastic, every single episode was superb, the series is as good as it gets, and the characters are just real. You care for the people of Deadwood with all their misgivings, you hate the hearst beast, and now we’re left with “America’s next top “.

I am tired of series being dropped by top exec’s. NBC, ABC, CBS, and now HBO. The truth is the Deadwood cast probably wanted to grease their pockets with more cash. HBO probably wants to pay some weirdo instead. Last year I dropped the entire movie channel line up. Now I have only the top basic package and stars action pack. I also have the HD Voom pack because of the lack of HD support by the local channels and Voom repeats, repeats, repeats, It is soon to become missing from my lime up. Dish network is going to charge me 7 bucks a month because I have a HD receiver. (They donāt give us any breaks) I still pay 100 bucks a month for all of this and I am drowned by advertisement. Soon the Satellite and cable companies will be sorry for stealing from the viewers for so long. Local TV is on it way to multi HD channel capability. With HD DVD, DVD and Local HD I soon will drop and remove all the ugly satellite dishes from the top of my house and the once advertisement free cable companyās can find someone else to rip off.

Why in the bloody HELL would HBO cancel this show? It was the smartest, grittiest show I’ve ever seen. The writing and delivery were perfection. The characters and story line were so well thought out …absolutely brilliant!
Is this going to be a trend for HBO? Getting us so hooked on a show that we actually put to use the over-used term “water cooler talk” and tell everyone we know about the show only to have it disappear for NO GOOD REASON!? Too real?? WTF does THAT mean? I guess it means the same thing as “It’s not TV, it’s HBO”
So what are we left with? FLUFF! Curb Your Enthusiasm and Entourage. 30 minute comedies that aren’t well rounded enough to attract a broad audience. Are they canceled? Nope. Agenda? Yep. Oh, and don’t get me started on The Sopranos. Can you say “Downhill fast?” Big Love, I actually like. Give it a chance, you’ll like the characters once you get used to them. And Rome? Dude …sorry to offend anyone but to me that show was a joke.Big production, crappy characters and a BORING story-line.
I just want to let HBO know that, imho, that was a HUGE mistake. I hope you can come up with something as brilliant to replace it. I’m not going to cancel my subscription right this second. But come this time next year, if I don’t see something new that I like, I will cancel it. Your shows were the only reason I subscribed. All the movies you show I can get at Blockbuster FOR FREE with a rewards membership for the low price of $9.95 a year.

I am female viewer who loved Deadwood. I am sorry to hear there will be no season 4. I went to Deadwood when I was a young girl and something about the untamed territory was exciting even then. Now you would not think a female would be interested in the show, but I grew up on the tamer Westerns such as Gunsmoke, Wanted Dead or Alive, The Rebel, Bat Masterson, Maverick, Have Gun Will Travel, The Rifleman and Lawman. Deadwood was realistic and the best series I have ever seen. I would use some of the language right now to show my displeasure, but after all I am a lady.

I watched this show from season one episode one – emigrating threw the schedule a bit, but I just finished watching season 3. I find it incomprehensible that HBO would cancel this show. It’s brilliant on so many levels I don’t know where to begin – but above all, it was the most entertaining hour of TV on in the week and has instilled in me a desire to find out more about these real men and women that made America what it is. HBO president … cocksucker. Our scales are square, HBO’s aren’t.

What the fuck is with HBO? Deadwood has had some of the best acting I have ever seen on T.V. The character development has been awesome to date and I cannot believe HBO could have the unmitigated gall to leave its audiences in such a lurch and cancel this excellent show ! But it appears to be so typical of the fuckin idiot suits that run television stations that not only diminish the artistic integrity of writers and film makers for the sake of the bottom line, they also come across as having no regard for those who enjoy the art of good story telling. Deadwood has been the finest example of frontier life that I have ever seen. It has provided actors with such a great platform to showcase their craft and show the world what they are capable of doing. Some of the performances I have seen while watching this show have been amazing. The acting has been so truthful. The characters that these gifted actors give us in portraying such a vivid and realistic story is bloody well worth continuing ! Please keep this show alive and stop being so fucking stupid by cancelling this masterpiece !

What were you people at HBO thinking? This is a great way to lose not just a few viewers but MILLIONS of viewers. Ive watched every episode since season 1 religiously. And even watch the re-airs too. Theres sooooooooo much idiotic shit TV on now that are going season after season, and none could hold a candle to the superb making of Deadwood. Just shows you what this world is coming to. Deadwood was one of a few exceptions that made me actually turn on my TV and finially enjoy watching something. But I guess now I wont. Such stupidity!

I only been watching Deadwood for about two months and through DVD’s and tv and have watched every episode. The acting is first rate and believable. It is obvious that this series could go on for at least another two or three years. I find it hard to understand how it could end now. There is so much more to add. Many viewers, like myself, I am sure feel left hanging to the thought “what next”. Hopefully Deadwood is not over, and if so am glad that it at least had three good years.

I am extremely disappointed to hear about the cancellation of Deadwood Season 4. Deadwood was by far the best series on television and probably the best series of all time – including the Sopranos. It had historical significance and was as true to the time as I can imagine. The research was excellent.
HBO should reflect on the reasons for its success in the past. Success came from taking risks and having the intestinal fortitude to provide entertainment different than the mainstream. Success did not come from trading off quality programming for ratings. Deadwood was another bold move in that direction and, given the time, would have grown into one of HBO’s greatest successes. It’s too bad that HBO has become just another network driven purely by short-term ratings.

I just have to say that I agree with whoever posted that about Firefly earlier. I was shocked and upset when that was cancelled mid-season, and truly I think Deadwood was at least as good if not better. Ever since I started watching I have been reading the history of the city, and I have been surprised that many of the details are correct, and only minor dramatic license has been taken.
It angers me that such an educational and individual show has been taken from the air, and I would very much like to know why. Surely the people at HBO can respect the show as a portrayal of the rich history of America and the challenging and interesting issues it raises about morality and humanity, and look past the fact that there is regular nudity and frequent cursing. It’s not like none of us have ever seen or heard either.
I live in hope that one day political correctness will be made subservient to free speech and enterprise, and organisations like HBO can allow themselves to feel the pride they should in making such an amazing production that has deepened and expanded my insight into the 19th century, rather than have to censor themselves for those too ignorant to face the real world.
I’m not impressed; this is one of best series I have seen, and I empathise with everyone here. It does seem that every time something truly special finally makes it to air it is torn down before we know it, but to allow such a series to end in the inconclusive manner it has is just shameful, and I hope those who made the call come to rue the decision they have made.

There was a time in America that a person could go to sleep with the front door opened and unlocked. Then, wake up in the morning and have the sweet smell of the local bakery in the air and fresh milk delivered to the front porch.
Then the world went blank until 3 seasons ago and we went to sleep knowing that even if the whole week went bad, well, we still had a great episode of Deadwood to look forward too.

What we hope for now are those two 2-hour TV films David Milch wanted to do to wrap up the story line.

Deadwood was the first program in years that I never missed a single episode from start to finish through all 3 seasons. This series is without doubt the best written, acted & filmed program I’ve seen in years.
99% of the programs out there right now pander to the lowest common denominator whereas Deadwood made you think, laugh, squirm & cry, without pulling any punches at all, something that should be applauded & copied by ever film/tv program maker on the planet.
I look forward to hopefully seeing the series finale movies & then whatever David Milch goes on to do after will be viewed with interest by me.

I have been waiting and waiting and waiting. This is BULL! I love this show and can’t figure why in the world this is being cancelled. HBO appears to me to be losing their balls. This show had me hooked from the introduction. I don’t even like Westerns, however I would rant and rave about this show to everyone. This show was so well written that I would watch the new episode, watch it again ON DEMAND and watch it again with whomever had not seen it to get them up to date on what was going on. As well as watching it on DVD. Ratings can’t be the reason this show is being cancelled and if it is HBO sucks at advertising. This show has diehard fans and has won numerous awards. This is BULL and HBO is going to lose out on a lot of viewers. The best thing HBO has is their series’. Deadwood, Rome, Lucky Louie, even Big Love was better than 95% of the crap on regular television or cable. HBO is becoming quite a disappointment.

You really have to wonder what those hoople-headed cocksuckers at HBO are thinking, I just started viewing this on DVD and like evryone else here think it is the most amazing show that I’ve seen on TV. From the incredible cast – Ian Mac Shane is such a force on the screen – to the sets, costumes, photography, and above all writing this show should have gone on forever let alone at least one more season to close things down in a way that would be good for everyone.

I’m very depressed. Have just lost sky on my broadband here in the UK due to another highly paid idiot, and was considering moving to Sky. Thought “ok, lets check to see when Deadwood is starting and make sure I change before then”.
Then I found this and I’ve hit the bottle.

I thought season 1 & 2 very good – but season 3 was awesome, there was me, naive as it turns out, thinking season 4 would be coming soon – finished watching 2 on dvd twenty minutes ago, cannot believe that is it save two ‘specials’ – are they off their trollies at hbo or what? just about the best series and one of the most realistic westerns made, gets scrapped when there must be double the number of seasons in store? maybe making way for ‘reality tv moron rubbish’ to sell to real cocksuckers!????

As my husband sits downstairs and watches the first show of the last season of The Sopranos, I sit upstairs pissed off as hell that the most mesmerising, interesting, intelligent and damn realistic show that has hit the airways since Mash isn’t going to have the same distinction. Instead it is being washed down the drain because apparently we have to make room for more bullshit like we see on all of television. If I paid the bill for HBO it would be cancelled tomorrow, for now I will have to watch my DVD’s of Deadwood and hope to hell that HBO finds a fate as shitty as that of Bullock and Swearengen!!!!!!

I expected better from HBO, Deadwood is a hugely entertaining and original show. With Sopranos on its last season and the Wire wanting to quit on its 5th year what is HBO going to broadcast. Cancelling Deadwood is a terrible mistake and a TV tragedy. The show had so much life left to explore, it could have easily continued for 4th, 5th and 6th season. I can only hope that huge DVD sales and word of mouth can somehow miraculously bring the series back.

Big groundswell of opinion here! That I applaud. Deadwood truly is a superb experience (having just watched every season back to back!). Along with The Wire (which HBO also seems to be fucking with!) HBO has shown that they can produce the highest quality programming with some of the best production values I’ve seen.
So here’s an idea – why not send them an online petition?
I’ve no idea how to set one up, but if anyone else does, this would be an excellent means of expressing mass viewer disapproval which may make HBO reconsider their obviously stupidly flawed policy of axing quality in favour of trash!

I am writing to inform you of the end of my subscription to HBO. After years of loyal following, the end of the Sopranos and the canceling of Deadwood, Carnival, and the completely rushed finale’ of Rome have lead me to other channels.
I was sad to hear that The Sopranos was coming to an end, but I knew that the time would come sooner or later. I also felt pretty good about continuing my subscription with HBO because after all we still had Deadwood, and Rome. I mean that’s what you guys were planning right? You worked 3 great seasons to create a great show like Deadwood to keep the post Soprano crowd at HBO right? Then Rome came on and I had almost forgotten and forgiven you guys for Carnival. For me I felt pretty good about continuing our subscription with HBO.
Fast forward to whoever decided to cancel Deadwood, and Rome. Ahhhh, what happened to you guys over there? What kind of joke is this? You guys used to be the risk takers, the pioneers of great shows, and now it’s about money.
In any case, please understand that I sooo wanted a reason to keep HBO. But I feel that I am done trusting you guys with your shows. It’s like reading a book and having it yanked out of your hands in the middle of it. Some advice…. FINISH WHAT YOU START, ESPECIALLY IF IT’s GOOD!

After a friend had me watch his 1st Season DVD’s of The Sopranos, I subscibed to HBO in time to catch the 2nd season and have been a subscriber ever since. After the Sopranos one night, I caught the first episode of Deadwood . . . I was immediatley hooked. I called my parents and got them to subscribe to HBO. Of all the programming on tv and cable, I consider the Sopranos and Deadwood quality shows. Great writing. When the show ends, you just can’t wait until the following week for a new episode. I semi-accepted the end of The Sopranos. Afterall, I still had Deadwood. But, seeing as how Deadwood won’t be coming back, my parents and I (along with a few friends) will be cancelling our HBO programming immediately following the Sopranos finale on Sunday, June 10th. I think the HBO network needs to ask the public what we think is quality programming and worthy of our hard-earned money. Maybe I could start a group and encourage people to cancel HBO. There’s a thought.
ATTENTION DISSATISFIED HBO SUBSCRIBERS! Stand up for your right to quality programming and CANCEL HBO!

We waited for 6 months to collect our order of Deadwood 3 here in Queensland Australia, could not wait to get home and watch the whole lot. When it finished i got straight on to the net to see when the next series was going to be available to buy, to my shock it was cancelled.
So the public are being ripped off, we buy the first 3 series on dvd then they tell us they are not going to make the 4th, or at this stage no conclusion available. I think it has been a terrible marketing decision, just in the town i live in,everybody is buying there boxed sets, the loss of revenue alone would be in the millions. I hope some one else buys the rights to it and goes on to make all the money that HBO obviously does not want.

Come on…..Swerengen and Mr. Wu are the best….well, actually, so are Charlie Utter, Joanie, Calamity Jane, Doc…..ok….so I like ’em all…I was upset when they killed off Wild Bill Hickock so quickly. I can’t believe we aren’t getting the 4th season. My husband and I were given season 1 to watch and well, the rest is history. We spent hours in front of the tv and when season 3 came out June 12th, we were at blockbuster getting the entire season and watched them all in two days. What a let down. I suppose there isn’t much we can do about it at this point. Why don’t we petition HBO????? Probably won’t give a damn about us “little people”. I am so glad to see how many people like the series. I found it interesting that Deadwood is actually based on true facts. Can you imagine living that way? I sure can’t. Anyway, Deadwood is the best series to hit television and there have been a lot of series. We’ll just have to wait and see what the four hours will include. I just cancelled my subscription to HBO. Without Deadwood, they dont have anything worth watching. And when they do finally come up with something else, they’ll probably cancel it too. I’m switching to Showtime. At least they’re consistant with there programing. Dexter’s a kick ass show, and Masters of Horror is equally amusing, And I can’t see Showtime cancelling them. How silly I am. It’s now August and I’ve been waiting for Deadwood to come on. It then dawns on me that I was watching last year’s Season 3 in July, 2006 while my wife and I were driving around the US. And each Deadwood night in that week, we’d watch the show because it was “the best”!
So, stupid me (slow as ever) finally realizes “Where the hell is Deadwood”? After googling, I find out that Deadwood’s cancellation was initially reported last Spring (June, 2006).

I’m an Aussie out in the remote wilderness of Western Australia. I have the three boxed sets of Deadwood, and have delighted in them. I am bewildered by the cancellation of this superb slice of fictitious history. There is a lot of investment that occurs within the viewer as the complexity of the characters becomes apparent. I love and hate nearly all of them, this is some writing achievement. I hate to think that such rich characters will face the sort of brutish and short denoument that befell the crew of Firefly in Serenity the movie (an obvious parallel) due simply to the fact that there has to be closure. I would plead that the Milchman and his posse be given the option of completing the story arcs at the “normal” hectic pace of the deadwood series, rather than have to squeeze too much into a limited time. I guess that there is some magical accounting line they’ve crossed or something. The word of mouth on this show has been astounding and the impact it has on first time viewers is an experience in its self, and this is in rural WA! the audience will continue to grow and you’ll make out like bandits on the dvd’s but only if the ending is graceful, don’t tarnish what has come before, don’t let the show go out with anything less than your full support. It has been a joy to be along for the ride, give it the respect it deserves, please.

Can you please explain to me why I should have paid out over Ā£240, thats about $500 to you, for what is, it would appear, never going to be a finished product? In this country I think we actually have laws about this sort of bad business practise. Would you be prepared to re-imburse me what I have already paid out as the first three series, enjoyable as they have been, are now rather worthless.

I am shocked and dismayed. In one of the dvd special features it was noted, that people from all walks of life, have become fascinated with “Deadwood”.
It seems to me, that even if the series cost HBO, as a service to the people who made HBO, a success (viewer/subscribers), they should finish the project. Wonder if they tell their children and grandchildren half a fairy tale, then leave them hanging for the rest of their lives.

I am also rather astonished to learn the series will not be completed. The problem is nothing will happen to HBO we all have short attention spans and our follow thought is limited to these short answers on a blog. Can we make the wheels change and gives us an ending to a show that was spell bounding. You truley experience the wrath of human emotions with this show and to see executives destroy it upsets the fabric of their business. Leave it to HBO to cancel another great series. I got hooked on Carnivale and what did they do pull the fucking plug, so I stayed away from their series because I was pissed. So I see Deadwood get curious then I get hooked to the point where I use cocksucker excessively. COCKSUCKERS! I received the Deadwood Series as a Chrismas gift this year and it is the greatest series every put together, Now I find out that HBO is not coming out with a series 4. I believe that the folks at HBO who decided to pull the plug are “cocksuckers by choice” and are not good enough to be fed to Wu’s pigs. They should be left for the coyotes to eat. I am glad I never subscribed to HBO. I hope the people at HBO who made this terrible mistake lose their jobs as fast as we lost a great series.

Deadwood cancelled? What? That was the best show on TV ever. I’m not a big tv watcher only a few hours a week. The reason is simple, there is a bunch of crap on TV that is not worth wasting my time on. Deadwood was the only show ever that would make me count the days untill the next episode. Ya, I had to make sure the kids weren’t around when i was watching it but damn, is there no shows for “dad” anymore. I don’t care about fat people trying to get skinny or ugly people faking themselves with surgery. Deadwood was the best “man show” ever. Maybe some people with brains and balls like spike should take over. I don’t understand how such a great show could be dropped. Someone in controll must be seriously messed up. What a shame Deadwood was cancelled. By the look of the show, the budgets couldn’t have been that high. The acting and writing was of the highest caliber though, and it beggars belief that the powers at HBO wouldn’t value a show like this, even as a ‘prestige’ show which had maybe more critical acclaim than ratings.

What can I say … I think everyone else before me have been more frank in theirs comments about your idiotic, inconsiderate and thoughtless decision to axe what was probably the most in depth true to life acount of life in the old west. Not just in Deadwood but in many of the other mining communities who were all struggling to survive.
The sad part in all of this is that the powers that be at HBO probably don’t read all the negative comments raised against it. And even if they did I honestly don’t think they would care.
The problem at HBO is that they have forgotten how to be a viewer. They are so concentrated on their next “blockbuster” that they have lost all sight of the blockbuster they already have.
Wake up HBO and try listening for a change. As viewers we may not appreciate all the intricacies and financial aspects of bringing together such a brilliant series BUT we do know what we like. And what we like is Deadwood and more of it.
Season 4 ?? Try 5,6,7 and beyond …. Maybe even up to the present day … Now that would be worth watching.

I arrived late to Deadwood; but, like so many of you I was instantly hooked. I rented it from Blockbuster. I find it hard to believe that such a well made, well acted and well written show would be pulled off the air. I will miss all the characters and especially Swergingin.

This is a short sighted approach. Deadwood is probably the best series I have ever watched. I adored the Sopranos and never thought there would be anything better until I watched Deadwood. What HBO fail to realise is that they should be thinking ‘long term’ and should have built on their reputation regarding quality productions. To drop such a blockbuster beggars belief. What they have also done is alienated their clientele. I am yet to see any response on this site from HBO. Clearly they simply don’t care about their customers…a very bad move when you are in business.

HBO doesn’t care what we, the comsumers of the 2 best shows ever made, Rome and Deadwood, think. They only are interested in reeling in the cash for another series they may come up with, while we will get sucked in again to taking our precious hour once a week to watch the truly great episodes of our favourite shows and end up with our jaws dropped to find out there won’t be an ending to these great stories. As I said at the end of Rome ” I am not getting sucked in again to watch a show I really liked and then left hanging.” Then I gave HBO one more chance and watched Deadwood, saying the exact same thing at the end of the 3rd season. Pathetic I am to give them my precious time again and again, to only be disappointed in the end anyways. I give up on HBO finally and will switch my viewing to stations that have a good record for their viewers, and listening to what they have to say. There’s nothing I don’t think I could add that hasn’t already been stated above. I finished my DVD box set of Season Three just today, and couldn’t believe that: a) I’d missed out on it when it was on air, and; b) they would cancel this series after such an intense third season. I loved them all, but it was the third season that had me completely hooked. I found myself at times totally mezmerized, cheering, yelling, standing up, biting my nails, covered in goosebumps. I can’t remember ANY series that ever had that effect on me.
And now I find out it’s gone, and it ain’t a-comin’ back. Plus, we don’t the promised movie. Nothing. HBO and David Milch hooked us and then left us hanging. Totally non-sensical, totally heartless, totally disrespectful to fans. Just look at the responses above, HBO! And the countless other blog sites, articles and various other diatribes of protest I’ve read tonight. Does that not tell you something about loyalty? Do you just leave us all and move on to your next project–concerned only with “the color,” as Hearst would put it, and not much else beyond that?

I just got through renting all 3 seasons of Deadwood and found myself extremely disappointed that there wasnt a season 4. I havent seen a series on TV in a long time that I found myself wanting more of everytime I watched it. I saw a few episodes of it on HBO and wanted to start from the beginning and now after watching all 3 I was hooked. It was truly a great show, why in the hell would you cancel a show like Deadwood?

Once again we have to suffer the fucking frustration of having decisions made for us. HBO you are a disappointment to us all. Odviously you are unable to see raw talent when it has already bitten you in the arse.
The cast and all persons that have worked to make this series what it is, deserve in my opinion, to continue doing what they do so well for aslong as they are able to capture the audience. Which is what they have done with all 3 seasons and would have done with season 4.
HBO you need to review your decision making process or perhaps the people that make the decisions themselves need to undergo review???

I understand completely the reasons for devotees of Deadwood and HBO to be miffed by the executives’ decision to cancel such an intelligent programme. I remember the utter mortification I felt when Carnivale was made redundant. As for Deadwood, I cannot fathom the decision-making of the big-wigs at HBO. Why is it that programmes such as The Sopranos can run for six seasons, and Carnivale only two; and Deadwood only three? Unfortunately (or, fortunately, as the case may be), in Australia, one cannot subscribe to HBO; our programming is different. Even so, we are not immune from investing hours and hours of monthly and yearly viewing into the narratives and characters such as those we loved in Deadwood. It would be just, for those at HBO, to inform their dedicated viewers about the movie-length “ending” the channel proposed not too long ago. For those who pay their money to subscribe to HBO, one would think that this were the right thing to do.

Im assuming even if they wanted to change their minds, they’re too late, The actors are probably gone, snatched up by someone else signed to other contracts cause they were fantastic actors. I started off not liking Al, but as the series drew me in (via DVD as can’t get the show in the country I was living in), so did Al, and I ended up not only understanding him, but liking him, his humor, sarcastic as it was at times. Now I watched the last series, only to find out there’s no season 4, what the?????????????? Sucks big time!

Loved The Wire, Generation kill and Dexter is the business! Deadwood was by far the BEST. It seemed so authentic & really did transport me to a rough, muddy shithole of a place full of cutthroats & whores! Despite the desperate state of the place the characters were amazing and their intricate struggles were very entertaining. The language had a perfect mix of the archaic & the profane. The creators are geniuses for giving the lead roles such flaws.
Season 4 will be brilliant. I can’t conceive of there being no fourth season because the first three are fucking class!

I am a late comer to Deadwood. Started renting season 1 and part of 2 a few years ago. Then here in the last 2 weeks I rented all of season 2 to pick up where I left off and then did another marathon with all of season 3. It left me wanting more. The movie rental place had no info on season 4. So now I find out it was cancelled. And Ian McShane is some other tv series now. I am so disapointed. These have been the best westerns since Clint Eastwoods haydays of the 1960’s. The lanquage is intense especially how it is mixed in with Shakespearen dialog. Classic stuff. All I can say is HBO Cocksuckers!! I neeeeeeed more Deadwood!!!! Tried to watch Appaloosa and Come Hell or High Water. Talking about terrible westerns and poorly acted!!! Nothing is the same after Deadwood. I found myself going to the kitchen for shots of whiskey in between each DVD.

I was a late comer to this series, having only recently completed watching all three seasons and Deadwood is hands down one of the best written, acted and produced shows around. Such a shame series 4 was abruptly cancelled with the story line arc having not been fully completed.
Will miss all my favourite and endearing characters – Bullock, Charlie Utter, Joanie Stubbs, Cy Tolliver, Trixie, Calamity Jane, the Doc, Mr Wu, Mrs Elsworth and of course who can forget the one and only scheming Al Swearengen!

One more for the pot. Bought all 3 box sets only to find no series 4. I should have learned my lesson after buying Carnivale 1 and 2! Well, I can honestly say no more of my hard earned will be heading HBO’s way for expensive box sets(in fact no more box sets for me at all having just been bitten AGAIN with the 4400). Rental all the way from now on. It will still make me cross if shows get canceled but at least I won’t feel quite as ripped off! I thought HBO were the good guys, customer focused etc. How wrong was I.

With heavy-hearted regret, I lament having to continue on without being witness to the natural response of the motley denizens of Deadwood camp in the wake of the vile and loathsome acts perpetrated by Hearst. Whilst E.B. learn respect for his fellow man, for himself? Can Alma avoid the slippery slope of her liquid dope? Does anyone believe for one second that Bullock can hold his temper, even if Hearst operates his interests from outside of town?
A earth-shaking battle is about to ensue in the camp, personal story lines coming to a head. HBO’s spent millions producing this show and then, some accountant and a coward CEO get together and decide that the hoopleheads don’t need to see the ending. The box sets were selling for $50 – $60 each!! Reruns and repackaging and re-releasing and for goodness sake, merchandise will all generate revenues for some time to come. Regardless of the astronomical cost of the series, making a new episode (or 12), can’t possibly cost anything approaching what the first episode cost. Sets and costumes are already paid. Contracts were locked in… …confound it. Hindsight is 20/20 huh? If you asked your subscribers, your fan base or a dimwitted prairie dog they’d all have told you to push through the last season in its entirety and recouped your production costs on the re-re-re-packaging of the DVDs and whatnot. The series changed the standards for everyone in the game! I’ll never know if HBO makes anything approaching the worth of Deadwood, because like so many others I’ll cancel my subscription and warn others about getting too involved in anything else they make. What if they did make some great series that got us all hooked as much as Swearengen got us hooked? And then quit partway through?
HBO, your as useless as Elsworth’s dog. Seemed a boon, then left us to rot in the muck. You’ll not see another speck of my ‘color’.

My husband and are too are greatly disappointed in the decision to discontinue the Deadwood series. We enjoyed the series and we know of many more who also did. We have purchased all 3 seasons and watch them about every 6 months. Why doesn’t HBO reconsider.

I canceled my subscription to HBO as soon as I heard that they canceled Deadwood. I was as hooked on that as I was the Sopranos. I never saw Carnivale while it was on, but I purchased the 2-season box set on Amazon and watched the whole thing in 10 days. I couldn’t wait to get home from work to see the next episode! Damn good thing I canceled HBO; I don’t give a shit what else they put on, nothing will be as good as Deadwood or Carnival, and if it is I wouldn’t want to start watching it because you’ll get hooked on it and then HBO will cancel the fuckin’ thing!

THAT WAY, YOU QUIT BEFORE YOUR CHARACTERS BECOME CHARICATURES, LIKE THE NETWORK SHOW CHEERS, YOUR PEOPLE KNOW WHAT THEY’VE COMMITTED TO, AND YOU FINISH TELLING THE STORY TO YOUR VIEWERS.
ONCE IT’S DONE, YOU MOVE ON TO MORE QUAILITY WORK – NOT THIS START AND STOP NONSENSE.

I began reading it and remembered how pissed I am at HBO for not recognizing quality, canceling the series and leaving all the devoted Deadwood fans hanging…no season 4, no 2-hour wrap-up movie-just an abrupt end to what I consider to be the best eposodic ever aired. I dont believe this, i only bought the series 3 weeks ago, now i have just finished the last disc of season 3. So i go to the net to find out about season 4 and WAAH!! no season 4. I seem to recall doing this exact same thing when i had just finished watching the last disc of season 2 of Rome. It seems obvious to me now that when buying DVD’s of anything by HBO, i should first go on the net to see if they have finished the show properly and with the respect that it deserves. HBO…. This series was the inspiration to visit Deadwood South Dakota last fall. Visiting Wild Bill and Janeās crave sites took us back and history which we could imagine
because of the attention to history that David Milch so carefully wrote. Not knowing what happens to the cast after season 3 is a disappointment. Shame on you HBO.

Now that Oxygen Network picked up showing the reruns, maybe they will have the gusto (or balls) to attempt a reunion of the cast and possibly finish what HBO started so successfully. I know it won’t happen, but I (we) can always hope. What a money maker that would be. Mr. Milch, want to make millions more? Want to become popular again? I thoroughly enjoyed the first three seasons of Deadwood but am very sad that there is no Season 4 to finish out the great effort that was put forth. While the language was raw the story line was tremendous and it kept me wondering what was to come next in the saga with a great cast.

At the top of Norway, all people I know love this show. Everybody have watched the full three seasons, and the same people would love to watch the conclusion. Because of that I presume that ‘Deadwood’ is a really popular thing all around the western world, and that many millions are waiting around for HBO to finish it up..

I looked on Wiki and it talks like someone actually decided not to bother with another series. These are the things I want to pay for and it looks like many would. Maybe industry needs to look at generating funds directly from viewers in order to continue for as long as viewers wish.
That thing where viewers decide the future of events within a show would have worked great in Deadwood also. The online activity on a website would generate massive funds in itself through various means.

Deadwood, O Beloved, is reborn!!
Well, not exactly… but at least Timothy Olyphant is back in a cowboy hat. If anyone here, who has been mourning the “no show” wrap-up movies would like a consolation prize… I recommend that you check out Season 1 of the FX show “Justified”. It opens with Olyphant’s character, U.S. Marshall Raylan Givens, blowing away a bad guy he has warned to leave town or face the consequences. It is absolutely great, but alas, not quite so raw and grimy or cutting edge as Deadwood.
Still, “Justified” evokes the same Clint-Eastwood-like badass appreciation in me, which I believe will prove to be purely the quiet-rage essence of Mr. Olyphant. As a footnote, I would like to add that his performance in the feature film (based on a comic book character) “Hitman”, was equally impressive, though I thought he was miscast and over the top as the villain in the last Bruce Willis “John McClane” film, “Live Free or Die Hard”.
Yes, I think I will be keeping up with Olyphant’s works in the same way I never miss a Clint Eastwood appearance, and I am quite glad there is a new gun-slinger in town.

There was no closer and that is just so disappointing for the loyal fans. I unsubscribed to HBO because I loved the show so much and was so disappointed with the decision. HBO’s history of starting wonderful projects that literally keep you begging for more and disappointing fans with ending them mid-stream seems to be their forte. I was a huge fan of Carnivale…one of the most interesting and original series I have ever experienced was treated the same way as Deadwood. Two seasons and HBO cut the series loose with unanswered questions and fans screaming for more. Why? Because it cost too much and didn’t do well overseas. Well duh!!! Shows depicting American history of the great depression and a western era that other countries didn’t experience…did ya really think that they would. But America loved it, but I guess that wasn’t enough. I just hope that True Blood doesn’t suffer the same fate. Currently I am not a subscriber to HBO anymore, which it sounds like from this thread I’m not the only one. HBO, wake up! By leaving your fans out in the cold you are losing profits. Just finish a series the way it is

We love this show and recommend it to everyone. We only discovered it last year and have now watched all three seasons. We cannot believe that there is no more Deadwood to be watched. I can’t believe that HBO would make such a great show and then axe it. There is so much mundane and mindless crap on TV – series that go on forever despite having no merit at all. My partner and i loved deadwood, everyweek we looked forward to sitting down together and watching it. my husband got to the stage where he started immetating swearengen’s, talk, he absolutely loved him, and of course trixy. He bought the box sets and watched them over again, repeats came back on tv and watched them again too, Its a shame such a excellent show was taken off. It was mean, it was dirty, it was everything.

7,9,10 are appealing to the masses, Laurie. That’s where the adv ertising revenue is. We are so lucky to have the ABC and esp ABC2. Only the ABC seems to be using their new channels effectively (ie showing some guts to air programmes that are interesting, challenging and different). Poor old SBS has lost it…almost past its use by date IMHO.
The plots, characters and language of Deadwood are complex and engaging. I suspect my boxed set will get many viewings!

Season 1 & 2 were perfect if you ask me, but season 3 lost me half way. I my opinion the lack of originality (with this I mean killing Hearst and coming up with some new material for season four) has killed the show.
I felt very dissatisfied/disappointed at the end of the third season, I waiting for a climax that never came.
I agree that killing the show is nothing but a shame, but am i the only one who was not satisfied with the third season?

Just finished third season now, bought all boxsets. And I very much agree with Paul, season 3 was a huge disappointment compared to 1 and 2. But it has happened again – HBO cancelled a show I adored, like they did with Carnivale, leaving me in frustation. Hope they’ll make the movies so we can get a closure.

I agree with many on here, the canceling of Deadwood meant me canceling HBO. Like they have such great potential shows waiting in the wings….not. We (in UK) have had the 3 series boxset since it came out. We have watched it and watched it. Like many others have said – it is infectious, the Deadwood way of talking,ut of town by looking out for the plots and sub-plots each time we watch there’s something new. They should have made a final series to tie up all the loose ends – did they get annexed to Dakota, did the pinkertons get run Woo etc etc???????????????

Just reading the press release from David Milch, the director (producer?) they said HBO needed the ”eyes” (audience) that Deadwood wasn’t producing, why then don’t they advertise more because I hadn’t heard of it until my partner bought over the box set and I LOVE IT. Am sure there are more people like me!!

A latecomer to Deadwood, I watched the final ep of season 3 last night. I feel like Alma trying to kick the habit: cold sweats, near-delirium, the works. Reckon I’ll have to start over with season 1, but I’d much rather see a wrap-up movie. Is it still a big “no”?
The other thing I’d like to see is a CD of the music from seasons 2 and 3. I got the season 1 music for my birthday, and my only disappointment is that I can’t listen to it at work or with my kids in the car, due to the lines of dialogue…which are as well-chosen and marvelous as the music, so I suppose I can live with it.

I recently borrowed season 1 from a brother. Enjoyed it so much i went to Best Buy and purchased season 2. I then went back to Best Buy for season 3. I am very disappointed to hear there won’t be anymore episodes. Such a great program to see it taken off. Hbo should have taken some of their other shows off before this one. Truly thanks HBO

After reading the comments and learning why HBO cancelled season 4 I do agree that they need to promote it more for the people who do not have many movie channels.
I bought all 3 seasons after hearing about it earlier this year 2011. All my friends call it real and gritty.
Perhaps if a “good set of eyes”. are on the two hour movie, there may be more.

We have watched Deadwood in a marathon of netflix CDs. I hope we can get the two 2hr movies. The research that has gone into the making of this series is incredible! I love it. We are soooo attached to the characters. It would be awesome to have it continue somewhere, some how.

McShane is a great actor and his previous BBC series “Lovejoy” was how I hooked onto Deadwood.I am amazed that HBO decide to close the first 3 series with 2 x 2 hour movies which arent even near production yet. McShane was in 73 yes 73 episodes of “lovejoy” in the mid to late 90s so not sure HBO really understand the Deadwood following world wide ….co*ksuckers ….now thats a word Al shouldnt have taught Wu or the Deadwood fans!

What a freaking’ joke; HBO decides to cancel due to lack of “eyes”! How many thousands of fans need come forward stating they only recently had discovered this absolutely brilliant series before the COCKSUCKAS at HBO realize they F*$KED up with an almost invisible ad campaign?
I’ve watched many TV series, and this is the most raw, compelling, and ADDICTIVE show I’ve ever seen, hands down! Milch is as genius a writer/creator as I’ve ever seen. Mcshane was legendary in his performance, as were many more.
I only discovered this masterpiece after happening upon, guessing rerun, the beginning of Episode 3 of last season a little over a year ago. I was hooked from the moment I saw Swearingen brooding over his hurt hand. I ordered box set same day and devoured lime Leon with opium. I’ve never been more pissed off. However, to those who may not have heard, sometime ago Ian Mcshane confirmed it was completely over and said the 200 yard-long set/sets were taken down.
Perhaps Al needs to give Dority the go-ahead to take out HBO execs who have denied the fans what they’ve waited so long to see. Left hanging and HBO could care less. COCKSUCKAS!

What a shame! The HBO execs who decided to cancel Deadwood should be fired. It’s a sorry state of affairs when excellent TV shows are cancelled i.e. Ray Romano’s show, Men of a Certain Age and Deadwood while garbage like Pawn Stars, Dog the Bounty Hunter, ad nauseum are kept on the air. It’s scary to think that the majority of our country’s citizens prefer trash to excellence.

I have had hbo for years and didn’t even know about deadwood however when I found it I did nothing but watch it for 3 days straight. Figuring that kind of over dose on a show my cause me to miss some things I am watching it again just to be sure I got it. What are you people at HBO doing. I like everyone else never even knew this series existed and was introduced to it by our neighbours. My wife and I watch it everyday we can it’s without a doubt the best series I have ever seen. I did not mind the sapranos but this leaves it for dead. Whoever your executives are they should be drawn and quarted, what fools to cancel such a fantastic show. I will never watch another HBO series again, for fear it will be cancelled. As a 47 year old the series Deadwood is probably the only one I have ever been so addicted to. I was sitting through around 6 episodes a night until I had completed the whole box set. Here we are nearing the end of 2011 and I am still introducing people to the show who did not know it existed and are immediately hooked. I work with a multi-national company and the amount of guys who did not know this had been done (including Americans) is staggering. I myself am British and can honestly say that the acting in this show is far better than anything I have seen on TV. The downside of introducing so many people to the series though is the anti-climax they experience on the ending of season 3. Your advertising guys and you market researchers truly missed the plot on this one. Does nobody at HBO have a finger on the pulse of what the average guy in the street can see as great entertainment. You need to seriously hire some guys in touch with the mainstream gents.

I agree with you all. Deadwood is/was one of the most fascinating and riveting series I have every seen. I could hardly wait for each episode to see what would happen next. All the actors in both major and minor roles were well cast and excellent in their portrayals. There were so many plots and subplots that it was hard to keep track of them all. The only issue I have/had with the series was that some of the elements in the story were not expanded more. (Time restraints, I guess.) I hope HBO changes its mind or something is done to correct this huge error.

I concur with all of the comments! My husband and I do not watch any other shows regularly (or at all actually), except Deadwood. We discovered it earlier this year and are about to watch the final episode of Season 3, and we are so bummed that there is no Season 4. The language, acting, sets, historical storytelling, and authenticity make it an exceptional and rare film/series. There is so much about Deadwood that engages the viewers’ minds and it is truly a disappointment that the support for, at the very least the completion of the story was cut short when so many fans are waiting. It seems entirely wrong!! Hopefully the COCKSUCKAS will come to their senses.

So tickled to see the comments dated 2011. I have watched Deadwood EVERY time that it has aired. I admit that having the captions helps with the language. What a series and HBO was foolish to not find a way to fund it. Such characters and I even dislike the Hearst newspaper empire even more when I decided to check out George Hearst and find out that he was responsible for starting the whole empire built on the blood and sweat of Deadwood miners.

Ya that’s totally bullshit. The deadwood series was never advertised back in the 1st two seasons and I only found through some religious hbo watchers that swore this was the best series they ever saw. I know everyone says that about almost everything these days, but this show is truly exactly what people proclaim it to be and also so much more then what is expected from a western; let alone 3 season running series. However, if people need a show to fix their deadwood itch then I suggest Justified as a great FX series to watch because its got the same type of great character developments as deadwood, but don’t get me wrong “it’s no deadwood”. But its great and to see sherif as a marshal in this modern take on your typical cop drama but with a bit of that deadwood flare that just keeps you wanting them to produce two episodes a week. However, if they do decide to make the two hour tv – movie the fourth season to deadwood I won’t be complaining because that something is better then nothing – deadwood should be advertised by its fans and people who just fell off the wagon to this fantastically developed series that is just two short after an amazing 3rd season and finally episode which leaves the true western buffs the illusion of what will eventually happen in the town of deadwood. ps: breaking bad would be the only other show I can say that was developed just as well deadwood, or justified and it had a lot of tv promotions to get its fan base and extended the series to keep fans like me craving more in this twisted plot design. But again, there is nothing like dead would. Its one of those rare, and unique shows that should get an 11 out of 10 or get a 10.1 on IMDB because in this case, and maybe only in this case… Is this cancelled series deadwood truly a hard show to compare to anything I have ever seen. Episode per episode it just gets better, and better – so why stop something that gets better and better. Because its taking away from the big money givers that push those shows with buzz like names and no real plot of story that give any sense of originality at all. Its almost all the same shows and movies out there, but there is something about deadwood that just can not be explained… You just got to watch all three seasons in less then 2.5 months just like me… Deadwood will do that to you too. But then just watch ‘justified’ because that show got cancelled too, and for the same reasons as deadwood, but it’s coming back because of the buzz around deadwood and the late catch on by fans and friends of mine.

I just got turned on to deadwood and was absolutley SHOCKED that the last episode I just watched was THE END What The #^(* HBO ” BIG COCKSUCKARS” for doing this to such a big fan club. I thought something was wrong with my direttv recording because NOWAY would somebody leave us hanging with NO END. Just unbelievable.

at the risk of stating what may be obvious, the last episode was intended to be the season finale, but since the show was abruptly canceled there wasn’t time to make a new, series finale episode, so that’s why it wasn’t exactly a “fitting” conclusion. hbo needs to make a tv movie to tie up all the loose ends and give the series a proper ending. of course, they probably won’t because they’re fuckin’ cocksuckers.

I just got the first season of Deadwood from a friend. By the second episode I was hooked. Looked up online to see how many seasons and came across this website. I can fully agree with all the others. This is an amazing series that should be kept on the air. Now I will be disappointed by the time I finish the 3rd season since I know the COCKSUCKAS dont care to add more seasons. FUCK having a two 2-hour TV movie event to finish it off. I want more seasons and with that “you have to shallow and not spit”

I’m about half way through S3 and was looking forward to S4 and then discovered that it has been cancelled and am gutted. This was Shakespearean in its writing – the monologues by Al and his addressing the box containing the head of the Indian chief, the lighting during the soliloquys was like looking at a Rembrandt painting. Stunning, absolutely stunning! How could HBO cancel it?

How disappointing to not have properly ended this fantastic series. The profanity and environment are most likely what a gold mining town would have been like in the 1870’s. The character development was outstanding. Swearingen was the best. Complex personality. Never quite knew what to expect from him. I have a few episodes of Season 3 left and am loathe to have it end. I don’t understand why it was so abrobtly cancelled. I’m not a TV watcher and it is unusual for me to get hooked on a series (other than Andy Griffith and LOST š But Deadwood? I will be bereft.

Deadwood Season 4 ended when HBO decided not to renew the actors’ contracts for complicated reasons. W. Earl Brown, the actor who played Dan Dority, explained it like this at the time:
“It has nothing to do with pregnancies. It has nothing to do with conservative watchdogs.
It has everything to do with money.
Chris Albrecht, HBO CEO, is in danger of losing his job. The network is bleeding red ink. His production side lost a ton of money. They sunk 120-million into ROME. They are committed contractually to another season, plus they have 120 invested already.
On DEADWOOD, they did not get foreign rights. Paramount had a deal with Milch to work for them. In exchange for them releasing him to HBO, they got foreign rights to our show. So for three years, HBO has not seen that money from around the world.
While we are the second biggest show on HBO, we are the 2nd most expensive to make (half of what ROME costs, mind you). Chris has shareholders to answer to and is panicked to cut the bottom line. David refused, feeling that to conclude with anything short of a full season (which we’d already been given word of) would demean all the work we’d done prior. I agree.”
So as you can see, it was a bit of a standoff–and we, the fans, were the ones who lost the most. Rumors of a movie have continued circulating the past couple of years, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen. I was surprised it wasn’t canceled after the first season. The writing was so bad and I’m not talking about the swear words. I’m okay with that, it was just bad writing. Season one, it was like he tried to fit every swear word he could into the script. Season two and three he went with more of a Shakespeare theme with a proper amount of swear words. It was hard to understand what was being said and the meaning of what was being said. Even one of the actors mentioned this in one of the special feature interviews. I agree they should not have cancelled it but just canceled the contract with the writer and fixed that aspect of the show. The storyline and the slight resemblance to American History was good. Over all, I enjoyed the show, but the cancellation is not a big surprise. I’m sure they stepped on some shoes using the “N” word along with some of the other racial words they used. I felt that was good. Those are the words people used and even my parents used those words not that so very long ago. The cocksuckers at HBO definably threw the baby out with the bathwater when they cancelled Deadwood.

Chris, if you would have watched the whole last disc of the first season – it was extras, 4 parts to be exact. One part explained all about the languaged used in the show. As far as the swearing, aparently it was mild on the show compared to what it would have been in real life.
The way they talked when they were not swearing had to do with the language uneducated people used mixed with the language others who could read got from reading Victorian type books from England. That’s why they talk so strangely at times.
The farther you go back in years, the more difficult it is to understand what they are saying. Think Shakespeare – he was english – then advance the language a couple hundred years and some – and that’s basically what you got – what they spoke in deadwood. Look at how the self proclaimed upper crust of England still speak now.
The show would had not been the great show it was had it not been for the language – I think it was vital to the whole vision of the show – but hey I could be wrong about that part. If Deadwood turned out the way David Milch wanted and it fit his vision, then I right and it was vital to the vision and the show.
And,…… I also love the swearing and HBO are COCKSUKAS!!!!!!

I’m part way through Season 3, just saw this website and realised the series is going nowhere. I’m amazed at how bad I feel. Whatever HBO’s rationale, it comes off as caprice, having nothing to do with the merits of the program. Never seen anything better. I loved The Wire, but it wasn’t better than Deadwood. A wrap up movie or two is better than nothing if it isn’t rushed and there is absolutely no changes to cast. It just isn’t right to mess with something this good. It felt the same when Joss Whedon’s Caprica closed down prematurely.

The characters jump at you with what I believe to a outstanding presentation of how a mining boomtown could be .David Milch created the stunning depiction of Deadwood and the cast of acter were unfuckin’ believable , only to those dirty rotten cocksuckas rob us a proper ending to the encredble series to come along in along time .

I own all 3 years on DVD and annually replay all 3 in sequence daily until completed again. Each time I find new nueances about the show that make me like it even more. Like Star Trek back in the 60’s this show was ahead of it’s time, and I hope history will favor it’s return like Star Trek returned 20 years later. But let’s hope we don’t have to wait that long. PS Ive also visited the real Deadwood, SD, several times, stayed in the old down town Hotels, and although nothing like the TV show, it’s a great trip down memory lane, and many of the sites like Wild Bill’s and Calamity Jane’s grave sites are worth visiting for any die hard Deadwood fan!

Steve Robinson makes a point — it was cancelled a few years back. But Season 1 is still available on demand on HBO, and I just saw it for the first time. Wow – what incredible writing in terms of believable character development, language and plot. The actors do the scripts complete justice. Really impressive. The sets are brilliant; the pacing in edit and the music are perfect. I am so impressed. HBO takes risks, and I’m glad they are out there funding great writing. II, too, wish I would have seen the series when it came out so I could have lent my voice to adding more seasons. Also have to confess I wish Wild Bill (Keith Carradine) wasn’t killed off so early in Season 1. Carradine was absolutely phenomenal in that role.

Thank God I have the boxed set of all three seasons which I can revisit at my whim. I cannot believe that HBO/producers/writers would leave us hanging for a proper end to the lives in the Deadwood Camp. Shame on them to not give us comforting closure. My second guilty pleasure from the wonderful scripts is that I too can walk around my house and use all of the ‘regal’ cocksucka, mother fucking archaic English when carrying on a conversation with husband…who just looks at me like I’m outta my mind!! Please bring us a consolation prize as to how the lives continued (or not) of Seth, Sol, Trixie, Alma, E.B. and that prick Hearst….and poor Aunt Lou’s son, Odell who was left in the casket in Charlie Utter’s Freight Office. Oh, how fuckin’ unfair. If not, perhaps the many fans of the series can write our on ending.

I just finished watching the entire series for the second time (even better the second time). This show was incredibly written and delivered and I would like to jump on this bandwagon to finish the series. I understand that it wrapped up a few years back, but with the reshowing on HBO on demand they have added a whole new generation of Deadwood lovers. I totally agree with all, this is the finest TV Western I’ve ever sat down and watch. While I’m from Australia the potential of this show was unlimited, those who decided to axe it surely have rocks in their heads it could have gone on for years.

With 500 channels on tv today, you have to sift through the ore of non-scripted pabulum to find the gold. Deadwood was not just a nugget, but a bonanza. I too, have come late to the party of Deadwood fans, but none the less enthusiastic. As “Dan Dority” explained in a post above, it seems that the George Hearsts of HBO have indeed triumphed which only proves the point underlying the entire series progression from chaos to capitalism – no matter how badly we want to slit their throats and throw them to the hogs. Just finished watching Season 3, (a little late to the party, I know!) Awesome show. Love the acting, directing, sets, audio. I’ve seen too many good shows canned lately – Caprica (Spinoff of Battlestar Galactica) and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. All great series’ in their own right and not given the time to end in their own way. I’ll need to watch the wrap-up episodes now, season 3 left a lot of questions to be answered.

I find it hard to believe there is not an audience for such an amazing series. I was never ‘into’ the westerns before Deadwood. But the acting, characters and overall plot have left me hooked!
If HBO cannot sell such high quality entertainment, then their own advertising is at fault. Sell story to BBC, there are plenty of Deadwood fans here in the UK.

Much to my dismay, I know that there will never be a Deadwood Season 4. I find myself thrilled when I spot the Deadwood actors in movies or tv series and know that they are alive and well and employed…even if the part is “blah” compared to their Deadwood character. I really wish Timothy Olyphant could let loose with a string of choice cuss words as U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens on FX’s “Justified.” Oh well.

I’m a Deadhead for Deadwood – on my 6th time watching the series and was sooooo bummed out that there was no season 4. I agree withe the Justified role Tim Olyphant is now playing as US Marshal Raylon Givens. Thank god he’s in another TV series.

DeadWood was the BEST series I have yet to see. I would not have cared to watch it weekly as most viewers had to do. I never heard of it until it was recommended to me at the local video store.
I picked up the First Season and couldn’t shut it off. I watched the whole first season in one night and early morning. and ran to the video store for Season Two.
I was very disappointed to hear the video store clerk tell me the series was cancelled.
After watching season two, I was wondering if the Hearst Corporation had anything to do with shutting the series down, since the series showed George to be a criminal.
I just finished Season Three this morning, and did a search to find more info.
I’m glad to hear there are two two hour movies left to watch.

Furthermore, we should be grateful that HBO ever gave us Deadwood at all. Most of Hollywood is so incompetent that they constantly remake or remaster old classics because their infrastructure for producing films is so decrepit. There are probably three movies a year at the current production rate worth seeing in theaters. Most of all the good screen work is being done on TV series now, like Game of Thrones, Deadwood, Rome, so an on so forth. Even if HBO is so clueless that they always seem to cancel shows right as they catch mainstream. Oh well, atleast they move on to another wonderfully incomplete series. I wonder when they’ll cancel Game of Thrones. probably after this second season.

HBO announced the cancellation of “Luck” apparently because of the death of three horses. I’m so sad that any animal died – BUT perhaps this might be the time for HBO to consider doing a final 2-hr episode of Deadwood – sending it off into the sunset and letting us diehard fans rest in peace. I just finished Deadwood Season 3 and am thoroughly disappointed there is no season 4. I thought my wife was made a mistake when she said thats the last disk of the last season. It is one of the best series I have ever seen.
The “Cocksuckers” at HBO need to take their heads from their asses and not screw their viewers. Im shocked they left everyone hanging like this.
It’s a dam shame, Deadwood was a great show!!

I just want to say how much I loved this show. Didn’t watch it while it was on HBO for I didn’t have HBO but started renting disc after disc and freaking love it. The foul mouthed drunk Jane was my favorite. She was HILARIOUS. Loved her. Really wish they wouldnt have cancelled it especially with Mr Timothy olyphant. Yummy.

My husband and I just finished watching the series thru it’s entirety for the second time and somehow I still found myself hoping it would just keep going!!! LET’S START A PETITION, for whatever good it will do, to get the show back on!!! I’ve heard ‘Arrested Development,’ a show which was cancelled and had not aired for a few years, is now going back on air, SO WHY NOT DEADWOOD?! All of the characters were so solid and so well developed that it would truly be a SIN if it were over!!!!

HBO really shit the bed on this one… Deadwood must be brought back for at least 2 more seasons to finish what they started!
Why would they stop making such a gem of a show?! Too many quality characters and interesting story lines? Tired of making the best western of all time? Cocksuckers making the show got greedy perhaps?
I can’t help but think the show is a metaphor where HBO is Hearst and the plan all along was to leave the people of Deadwood (the viewers) hung out to dry after building us up for 3 of the best seasons any show has ever aired.
Well HBO you succeeded, congrats. While you are massive cunts for having stopped making such a phenomenal show for no apparent reason, I thank you for some of the best quality television I have ever seen.

absolutely we should talk about a fourth season, this show while directed at a different audience, was on its way to being possibly an entourage. this show had depth, and charecters that compelled me. a story line that a guy could beleive, bec ause it was of a real cloth, it had a gritty feel and an absolute honesty to it. although they forced the show to come to such a weak ending, that would make it easier to just run off into a fourth season. allow the fans that did love it and watch it religiously to have theyre last season, with a bloody end, “let the hoople heads have theyre way”!

I have 2 episodes left to watch of Season 2 and knowing that it’s going to end after Season 3 it’s tempting to stop watching now to avoid the disppointment, the problem is I LOVE IT!!! I dream about this show, it’s amazing. The talent in this show is stagering as well. I really hope they at least tie things up, by the sound of the other posts I am going to upset with the way things are left.

Deadwood was one of the most well acted shows EVER! We just finished re-watching the dvd’s for the second time. Who is in charge of making these decisions at HBO? I hope they’ve been fired and that a seanson 4 is in the works.

I can’t belive that there is no season 4. HBO is starting to remind me of FOX cancal a good show because they don’t get it. Can of reminds me of Fire Fly, look at the following of that show. Deadwood used what i thought was modern Shakespeare of the old west, and the chacters were easy to get to know and care about enough to look them up on-line to know more about them.

My girlfriend and I had rented seasons 1-3 of Deadwood and fell in love with the show and the characters. After watching ssn.3 we fully expected a ssn.4 just because of the way the show ended. My heart sunk when we found there was no ssn.4. We Need Closure! Please HBO.

Did they ever make the 2 movies of 2 hours each? If they have where can you buy them. Have seen Season 1-3 and I want to know how the ending of series goes. For HBO to leave us hanging is like the Florida Hanging Chads, for shame HBO, if I cannot find out what has happened I will cancel my HBO subscription, don’t watch most of the time anyhow, might save some money.

Why don’t HBO over comment? I guess because they know they are wrong in cancelling season 4 and then not producing the 2 x 2 hour tv movies that were mean to be the compromise that finished the story. Can money really be an issue for them considering as everyone says, the other good stuff they do eg. Rome, Game of Thrones etc. don’t seem to have budgetary issues. There must be a good reason – reckon we would just like to know what it is!

HBO is making a big mistake not bringing deadwood back!! Its one of the few good series that they have. whoever was responsible for casting the characters for this show did a superb job!! This show had everything going for it. I especially loved calamity Jane and the off the wall crazy shit she would say:-)

I took HBO just for Dead Wood. I am going to cancel HBO. My husband and I looked forward on seeing Dead Wood every week. I have been waiting for Dead Wood to come back on, since it will not return than I guess i will be saving money. SO LONG HBO.

Highly addictive!!!!!!! Heartbroken no season 4. Amazing actors and sets. I want to visit deadwood now. I searched for season 4 to my dismay nothing. It would have been amazing to see all those gangs fight it out in deadwood over their turf. HBO do the right thing and bring it back. Now that you have another source of viewers with iphone, ipad and hbogo you can capitalize on these people hungry for media.

I just finished watching all 3 seasons of deadwood. Its the most intelligent series Ive ever seen in my life. My wife and I are sad that its over. If I had my way, the show would never end. My hats off to the folks that put the series together and the actors that absolutely kicked ass and made me addicted to the show. Everything felt so real watching it. I am hoping that the audience is heard by the folks that could bring this back for us.

Well its a shame to see this series cancelled. Once again it comes down to money. Well let me say there are a few show on HBO that I enjoy , but enough is enough, I am cancelling HBO until something is done to change this. I would recommend everyone else do the same. The only way any TV network seems to listen is if there is money involved, so lets make our voices heard and speak to the wallet. If enough people cancel for an extended period of time, the money lost will speak for us!

so. glad to know I’m not the only one who feels the way I do about this show.
I have fell in love with all the characters… they are like family now.LOL. I do hope HBO can bring this masterpiece back. Pitch in to rebuild the set of deadwood it would be worth it for them to give it another shot. The fan base of deadwood is so big now. people all over are saying it to be the best series ever. they just didn’t give it enough time.

We just finished watching Deadwood up to the season 3, went to look if when season 4 would be out just to find out it would not be. What the heck is it with shows just ending? They eave you hanging, this show now reminds me of an old show called Soap that just ended. I think the lease HBO could do a 2 hour movie to end Deadwood and kill off those that need to be.

Like all the comments above – I watched all 3 seasons and loved the show – please finish it off – at least the ending HBO!! I read that they have taken down all the sets at this stage and it does not look like anything will be finished off now.

What kind of an idiot would not allow the cast, producers and writers of an excellent HBO series come to an end where the end is not known to the loyal viewers? You robbed everyone of a great story.
I suppose everyone is busy working on other projects to afford the time and dedication to return and finish it.
Now I feel it is best to let HBO series run their course and I will wait and watch the last episode and determine if I should deploy the time and energy to watch the entire series.

With all of the love shown, and all of the request for Deadwood (season 4, or finale) I can’t figure out what these writers/ producers etc., are thinking about! It will go down as one of the best western series of all time with one of the worst endings of all time! I heard of this show and I always wanted to watch it . I didn’t get the chance until this summer. I watched all three seasons and absolutely loved it, and so has my family. I have done some research on deadwood so I ultimately know how it ends but would love to see the directors,actors, and actresses aspect . It is and was a great show and I think it is sad that it is not finished in the right way.
