Rome Season 3 Cancelled

It’s been known for a while now, Rome, another superb HBO show has been cancelled and will end after only 2 seasons. Main reasons: lack of viewers and too expensive. [ source ]

Granted, Rome was originally intended as a mere miniseries but spawned into a full series after the network saw the quality of the scripts. Unfortunately for HBO and any other network, viewer numbers are everything, esp. when the cost for the entire first season is around 100 million U$. We cannot really blame HBO when the viewers rather prefer crap over intelligent, quality TV series. If more people would have watched shows like Rome, Deadwood, Firefly, Invasion they would not have been cancelled, easy as that. Networks need to make profit and have to provide what the majority wants to see and if the majority wants to see crap then they have to give them crap. Besides, what network are you looking for when you want to watch quality shows? HBO, right?

Rome will end on March 25th 2007.

  1. I am pissed. The only reason I have HBO is because of the gritty and dare to do series that they put out. Rome was absolutely brilliantly done and this is seriously going to make me think twice about continuing with HBO if they are going to for lack of anything better “lose their balls.” This is a tragedy. I have personally gotten people to see this show and given HBO Series’ new fans. HBO needs to do a better job of advertising there product. I know that after I saw shows like Deadwood and Rome I was instantly hooked and would have followed those shows for as long as their writers were writing. Truly disappointing.

  2. Really pissed about this. HBO gives you superb entertainment and then yanks it out from under you in 2 seasons. Rome wasn’t built in a day, you know. Like a previous fan who wrote about this show, I too have suggested people watch it and when they have they have all given me positive feedback. I agree, HBO’s marketing of their really good stuff is the pitz. I don’t even watch television regularly except to catch one or two distinctive shows. This was one of them. Makes me sick to think it’s over before it’s over.

  3. I’ll have to say that I am quite shocked. I came on here to find out when season 3 was coming out and it was like somebody dropped a stinkbomb at my grandmothers funeral when I found out they had cancelled the show. I will not stand for this, I’m starting a campaign against HBO right now. If you would like to support go to [broken link]

    Peace fellow Romans.

  4. I didn’t think television executives could out do the cancellation of Vanished, but yey again I have been proved wrong. This show is just starting to take flight and HBO has decided to end its short run of glory after only two seasons. I am joining forces with my fellow roman from Kain in his campaign to let HBO know what a huge mistake they are making. This will be revolution for the ages.

    Long live the 13th

  7. This is total crap! This is the best show on TV. I should have known it would get cancelled if I really liked it. My wife got me HBO just for this show and it is the one show that we make time to get together and watch and what now only two or three more shows.

I agree with previous posters that people were just getting to know about it and starting to watch. HBO will be cancelled at our house.

  8. Absolutely stupid on HBOs part. Definately the best series I have ever seen and sadly to say only 2 seasons long. 100 million or not I believe this will be a loss for HBO to remove such a great series. People I know who aren’t even in to that kind of scene or the roman era have all fell in love with the series. I don’t watch much TV but I can say I have only seen Rome advertised twice. Id say that if they had done a little more to make it public they would have no problems at all gaining viewers. The viewers only know what people make public, unless they are couch potatoes. All-in-all great & historic series with just about a little bit of everything based on the way it was in that era. Id take away the Sopranos after the 2nd season before Rome. Pretty sure HBO will notice a small drop in margin after the end of Rome. HBO you suck.

  9. Well I am sort of getting used to this as a long time fan of HBO and their shows. They canceled Carnivale when the storyline was getting really good. So it appears that they are doing more of the same with Rome.

Now that King Herod has come into the picture in Rome, and any student of the era or religion knows that the time line of the story is quickly approaching the times of Christ. The potential storylines for this timeline is absolutely enumerable. Think Dan Brown here, and typically HBO is the only network with the balls to push the limit of television that far.

Well now Sopranos is almost over, Sex and the City is gone, Carnivale is gone, K-Street is gone, The Comeback was terrible, Deadwood is canceled, and if it wasnt for Bill maher and Entourage, I just wouldn’t watch. But with the record above, they may kick the last two good shows on the network to the curb too.

  10. What the hell????? I just watched tonights show and saw that there are only two more episodes, I then do a search for season 3 and find out that it has been cancelled. What the hell are they thinking. This is the best show on TV. Are we really going to sit back and have crap like American Idol and all the other bulls**t shoved down our throat. The only time I watch TV anymore is for Sports and shows like Rome. HBO WILL BE CANCELLED RIGHT AFTER THE LAST EPISODE OF ROME AT MY HOUSE. The boxing on the the netwotk sucks anyway. F**K THEM!!!!!!!

  11. How typical of HBO. Just when they do something right, they yank it. Is it HBO or the typical American viewer, who has a 15 minute attention span?

I will be more than happy to drop HBO and let them know why. Would I keep it for their absolutely worthless movie line-up? Listening to Bill Maher whine? Washed up lifeless Sopranos? More like Deadwood and Rome.

This show is by far the best in years and HBO is canceling it. this is a shame to all TV watchers who appreciate history, a good story line and some good acting. 13. How disappointing,

one of the best series in recent television history with an amazing cast, script, direction and what not is being ditched by execs due to insufficient viewers. might i remind everyone that shows like scrubs and what about brian were also very close to being ditched but viewers uproared and eventually got what they wanted,

rome is a daring attempt to replicate one of the most interesting periods in human history and although not accurate to the dot it is still entertaining and keeps u wanting more and more after every episode you watch.

i hope enough people voice their opinions here so we can get enough signatures to maybe keep it going…

Perhaps the future of quality shows will find a new medium, like the interent. I already prefer some video podcasts to regular TV.

  15. This really is such a waste if it does not go for another season. I understand some of the actors have already signed up to other shows which is fine…allow a year to pass in order to raise the funds for Season 3!!!
Such quality like ROME should not be allowed to die because of a simple lack of money…such a shame…it really reflects badly on HBO/BBC.
Look…its simple…take some time off, raise the funds, get to work on some really great scripts (Jesus etc)sign the actors back up and we are away again in 2009!

  18. This is the last straw. Watching Rome had helped me put my life back together. I stopped drinking liquor on Sunday night so that I could remember Marc Antony’s witty remarks or the controversial flings going on in the timeless town of Rome. Whats more dissappointing is the potential this show had for coming seasons. My disappointment is surely worse than that felt by Marc Antony in last nights episode when he nearly strangled Octavian (which by the way is a clear metaphor of what should happen to any HBO executive) after he was told he had to leave the golden city.

If HBO didn’t have a couple of other quality shows like Entourage and Lucky Louie, I would be at there gates right now with a sign that said something along the lines of “How could you do this to me?”

  22. Very disappointing. Although they took some liberties with their storylines, the plot twists and character development were excellent. I understand that this production had to be very expensive but I thought that a joint effort between HBO and BBC would be enough to defray the costs.

The only things I watch are sports and the shows on HBO. I became so involved in Rome that I found myself researching history to find out what really happened. Did Caesar really pick an adopted son over his own with Cleopatra? Did Octavian really have Antony marry Octavia? What was King Herod doing there?

And by the way, Showtime’s “the Tudors” is no less than a response to the popularity of Rome if you ask me. Also, I’m surprised that you’re not seeing the stars of this series appearing on late night tv and other outlets. Shouldn’t we be seeing Kerry Condon on Leno or something? hmm.

Will there be a Season 3 for Rome? No. And no petition will change that. But given the fact that it was supposed to be only a miniseries to begin with we are lucky that HBO decided to do a full season and not only one but two! Otherwise we wouldn’t even have had that. And what brilliant two seasons, too.

I find the acting to be some of the best, I’ve seen on TV in a long time. I’m defintely going to buy this series when it goes on sell, or if it goes on sell eventually. And I’m defintely going to miss Atia (Polly Walker). I’m just so disappointed I don’t know what more to say!

I can not believe HBO is going to cancel Rome, it must be a hoax. Rome is a entertaining history lesson mixed with fact and a authors imagination carefully studied culture of the Romans. “O” crap, I assume that the alleged last episode Mark Anthony will be killed! Way to end a great great great great great great great great great series. I need more I really love this seris it is one of the most entertaining series I have seen in a while. They are probably going to fast forward the time into the future to show the rest of the story in one episode, bullshit. I am surprised as hell to hear this today but I hope that it is not true. C’mon HBO this would be a big mistake at least another yr. Showtime will have room now!

  53. The show wasn’t cancelled. It finished. A two series arc was all they had planned for. There simply isn’t a direct storyline following onto the one we have and the writers knew it. The first season was the first triumvirate, the second season, the second trimuvirate. But after this, nothing happens for many many years. Augustus brings about an era of peace and expansion and simply contends with a few germanic tribes. There are no great dramatic elements, there is nothing particularly out of the ordinary day-to-day life of a Roman for the next 40 years. By the time Augustus dies (of old-age, not really dramatic) everyone we’ve seen in this show will be dead anyways and a whole new era will begin. There simply is no natural narrative push in the time after Augustus and hence no reason for another series.

It wasn’t ‘cancelled’ it simply came to a close. Being part funded by the BBC makes sense for this. English shows in general do not need to run onto a million series and die away inglorious (as happens on most american shows that are given more than a 1-2 series run). They like their shows short and sweet with oodles of quality packed in and definate arcs finished. The show itself was also frighteningly expensive, easily rivalling the equally-excellent Carnivale in expense. Ratings are less and less important now due to the huge cash to be made from selling it overseas and the ratings pulled in there.

Rome is an incredibly profitable show and could easily run for another 5 seasons if the storylines were there, the desire was there and the involvement. Rome is an epic undertaking from everyone involved and two series’ is enough for me. I’d rather they take this superb cast and the huge amount of experience they must’ve gained and apply it to some other part of world history, say Alexander’s domination of the world, of the Khan’s invasions from the Mongol empire or any number of places. A lavishly done account of the Sengoku period of Japan would be incredible.

So relax guys, you can have too much of a good thing and isn’t it better that they invested all their talent into two outstanding seasons? Rather than to drag it out into thinly scripted and poorly financed soap-opera?

There certainly are shows to complain about cancellelation. Carnivale for example – easily one of the best shows of the last decade – ended on a massive cliffhanger that will never be resolved. But there is no need for more Rome. Let’s go somewhere else. Let’s do something different. It’s a big world, with a big history. Let’s see it.

THAT would be awesome if they did “Alexander” with these kind of production values. 800 minutes miniseries. Please!

It was good to have 2 seasons of Rome, yet the way it was presented regarding the “Season” concept should have been clearer. At first it was supposed to be a miniseries but turned into a full blown season which spawned a second season. If it would have been clear for the viewers from the start that the concept was a “miniseries” consisting of 2 seasons then there would be no uproar (well there’s always one…). As it is now, viewers feel let down. Understandably so.

  59. AZA… your point choosing another time period is a very good one, I would love to see many of these series, however, to say that nothing historically happened shortly thereafter is a bit of a cynical look. Look at all the drama’s that are airing on tv now… Tony Soprano is not real yet they seem to have plenty of storylines there. This was a fictional drama based on some very general facts. The show was excellent because they represented the lifestyles of that time amazingly. They developed many different and very complex characters both fictional and non. They were able to use those broad historical points and twist them to their liking. That is what writers are for. The bottom line is HBO did a poor job marketing this masterpiece. They did not run it with another show and they did not promote it much at all once it got going. The characters, actors, acting, setting and writing (along with history) made this show. Obviously many of us are going to miss it.

grabs you from start to finish. There should be more shows like this shown on HBO the battle scene”s are awsome the cast is perfect. Why Dont HBO use there imagnation. The writers are brillant they Could do a series like the movie TROY With the soldgers inside the trojan horse and have more gladiator scenes and Battle scenes. They should put it a driffent chanel with Dolby Digital 5.1 Surrond Sound. It makes me MAD to see great shows like rome not even giving a chance to run as long as everyone wants to See More You can see by all the Coments that it is a Big MISTAKE to cancel Rome.

  67. Yeah, I’m not surprised HBO canceled ROME. Why bother making good shows with amazing real world style graphics, when its cheaper to make more reality based shows like Entourage. I love Entourage, but it doesn’t hold a candle to the great story telling of Rome, Deadwood and Carnivale. Sure these shows are expensive to make, but I bet HBO makes up for it in DVD sales. Deadwood was on Blockbuster’s most rented list for ever and Rome was there as well.

I’m definitely dropiing HBO from my watch list. I’ll rent the Sopranos and Entourage, but to cancel three of the best shows on TV in under a year is unforgivable.

    Bad Form HBO. Bad Form

Oh well, now I can only imagine how the writers would have address and mirrored current political issues as a 3rd season would have logically lead to Palestine, but now I’m just dreaming. Oh, how I’ll miss the intelligent subject mater presented like all good history lessons with such great sex and action.

  70. Wow, I was online to switch my cable service to a different company when I did a search for the air times of Rome. Friends of mine had downloaded the show via bit torrent and shard them with me. I decided to reward HBO with my business for Season 3. I come to find out that they have canceled my favorite show. TV series take time to catch on. Just like Battlestar Galactica and Family Guy, these shows became much more popular as the file sharing community made them so.

I had decided to become a full time subscriber but now see no point. I know it’s an expensive show, but quality comes at a price. America is not as dumb as its ratings suggest. I refuse to watch shows like American Idol or trash reality TV like Americas Next Top Model. I have turned more then 6 people; 3 married couples towards Battlestar Galactica who are now buying the DVD’s and watching the air-timed shows. I was just starting to spread the word about Rome as well, but again, now there is no point. Such a waste…

I suspect the interest in this series will grow greatly as time goes by and HBO may find it let a real winner slip by if it doesn’t continue the franchise into the future.

The program was particulary masterful and entertaining in blending the truly interesting and believable fiction with other parts of historical accuracy. We will miss it….

  80. I was disappointed with the second season. It was more of a porn-serie.

I can imagine the director and his crew having sex during the shoot. “Cut! I want to f**k her too. A 10 minute break!”

Plus they made Rome look like one big whorehouse. Orgies everywhere, sex slaves, pot junkies and so on.

Rome was the center of the cultural world. Is that what you call a culture?

Also there were no fight scenes, but one. They always skipped the battles and on to the talking and fu**ing.

Season 1, IMO, was way better. If you’re talking about quality series, the first season is one of them, but the second could’ve been much, much better.

Maybe they should do more about the viewers, and not every TV serie has to make large profits. Why don’t millionaires spend a tiny part of their fortune to make great historical movies/tv series. Does it always have to be about the money?

Is there a single movie about Augustus? What about Genghis-Khan? What about the Greek Mythology? Only low-budget “Paintbrush-rendered” Hallmark movies with (surprisingly) good and well-known actors represent some of the greatest stories of our childhood.

  85. Everything good must come to an end, folks. And it’s far better to leave on a high note than a low one. “Rome” was a well-done mini-series that remained consistently excellent in both storytelling and production quality from start to to finish, and I for one am quite satisfied. If I want more, no worries. I can just pick up a history book.

In the meantime, those of you out there who believe companies like HBO should just continue to produce money-losing programs, regardless of how economically unviable it might be, get a grip. That’s not how the real world works.

Perhaps this will be a hint to the many, MANY posters here who represent a statistically significant fraction of what are likely thousands of viewers who just might have saved “Rome” if they’d just tuned in, instead of reminding themselves week after week, “Oh, I’ve heard “Rome is good. I really must get around to watching it.” That’s a big part of why good shows die. If anyone is to blame for the demise of “Rome,” it’s apathetic viewers who cry for better programming, but ignore it when it’s staring them in the face.

“American Idol” is better than “Firefly”? Case in point. Geez…

Well HBO is going to have some programming issues.. with the Sopranos on it’s way out.. there is nothing to replace it.. ROME would have been a great show to pick up on.. but as DAN said, it wasn’t making money, you loose the show, and that is a shame. I am still pissed off that Dark Shadows was canceled back in ’90 because the Gulf War was getting better ratings..

We should be happy that we got what we got.. and look forward and hope that HBO comes out with something better (I don’t know how!) or close to the quality that ROME is.

Gotta go.. Star Wars Ep I is on.. AGAIN.. and AGAIN and AGAIN

  92. I was a little disappointed to hear of the cancellation, of the third series of Rome. I was however, not surprised at a cost of §100,000,000 and a veneer of a true historical story woven throughout, that it didn’t survive.
Perhaps an examination of the reasons why may help others understand. So what are these reasons`? I see there is much complaint about the mindless and vacuous shows that have survived. I think that is the first sign.

1 The vast majority of American shows have a 20-5 second gap between canned laughter. Even shows that don’t have canned laughter have a 20-5 second line delivery. No thought required the laughs and the lines are delivered and easily understood by a largely unsophisticated and poorly educated audience. I understand they also do this in some news shows??

2 American audiences are the majority; they have been trained by advertisements (commercials) to have a attention span no longer than the Commercial advertisement so that they are prepared for the next 20 second message.

3 Laughter is more readily accepted than pathos, complex thought and concentration are things that have to be cultivated. Complex themes require knowledge and understanding.

In America there were small info bytes, explaining what was going on who was who and why. On trial showings, when they surveyed the audience prior to the launch of Rome series 1 they discovered rather alarmingly that some didn’t know where Rome was never mind Italy, One person surveyed thought Rome was in England and that Caesar was president of Europe. Others had no idea who the characters were. Cleopatra was a movie, true. I think they just left that one there, I think the introduction of the fact that not only was she real that she was also from a Egyptian dynasty and a long line of Cleopatra’s.. All of which came to more or less a sticky end; was left on the good ideas shelf, as too hard to explain.
I think when you arrive at the point of talking to someone who wears clothes but has absolutely no idea how they work, it’s a good idea to point in the other direction and say “what’s that”? When they turn to look, “run away”.
So the audiences were a little lacking, to them it was like having Shakespeare recited to them for 45 minutes in full old English. If you remember just how daunting that was the first time as a 12 year old at school you will know what I mean.
All of this was not wasted on HBO they make their money through advertisements and sponsors.

Rome; no canned laughter a minority audience and a whopping production cost, uncomfortable sex scenes many of which were cut for American audiences. HBO unlike the BBC in the UK. The latter which has no ads and is paid for by license fee, HBO has to recoup on their outlay of $100,000,000. If the profit margins are too low they will drop it.
There have been many series like Rome over the years, none quite so expensive I think. All have ended and I am sure in the future there will be others.
On the whole I found it enjoyable and will miss it, but I won’t worry about it.
If we want series like Rome and others to flourish to entertain educate and inform then what we must do is never complain about how much of our tax dollars are spent on educating the masses.
Rome introduced many to what the city was all about not just fine temples some of which still stand, but the infrastructure and cultural diversity, the nature of sex in Rome. The gulf between what many consider the ideal Rome and a more realistic Rome. However, in true Roman fashion “Rome the series” was rejected by the mob! Easily turned by a few tacky lines of a more entertaining sort. We shouldn’t complain we have just seen in action what we found so entertaining “the life of Rome, the mob”, rather ironic don’t you think that it would have been equally unacceptable to the denizens of that place. We have little to complain about and much to applaud in Rome. If they think of doing it again for a third series I would no doubt find it just as enjoyable, but for now we have Rome in all 22 glorious episodes to watch again until we tire of it. Like all good books it has an end.

As a fan of the Masterpiece classic “I, Claudius”, I was hoping HBO would take the series through until at least Nero. There’s a lot of juicy stuff! Plus I was hoping to see more of Livia…she’s a cutie! It would have been cool to see her poison and kill to have her son Tiberius be emperor (at least that’s how the book and miniseries portrayed her). However, I do understand HBO’s decision. Too bad Bill Gates wasn’t a fan, he could finance future productions!

I was just checking to see how long before it would be till we could purchase the second season……mmmmm seems we have to wait until November 2007 for release in Australia. I now read all of your postings about the 3rd season being cancelled………what bitter disappointment. It is truly a brilliant show and now it almost seems pointless to purchase the 2nd season if it ends up going nowhere. I truly enjoyed The Soprano’s and Six Feet Under by HBO and had hoped they would go on forever. It would seem from the postings that this is a regular gripe with HBO that they cancel the best shows just when you get into them. We don’t have a HBO channel and unfortunately usually have to wait for the release on DVD to watch the seasons at a reasonable timeslot. These types of shows seem to always be shown late, late at night. I will keep an eye out for future prospects of HBO’s plans re season 3.

I know your talk of numbers but I am sure that HBO makes plenty of profit from the mediocre shows the network produces, that would support a show of this quality and if you ask me, we the public deserve it.. I personally have had enough of the mindless drone. It’s a sad shame, when people are given a show with depth, history and plot that they look forward to each week and it ends in a mere two seasons without conclusion. If you at HBO had promoted this series properly in the first place, maybe the numbers would be different. Almost everyone I have asked in the last few weeks are just becoming aware that this show even exsites and are wanting too see what it is about. If you all feel the need to blame someone, fine, we’re big enough to take it. Stereotyping and an “assuming one/assumes all” mindset is of itself also pretty thin-headed. Sure there are plenty of idiots out there that watch the crap, but plenty of us that don’t, and prefer Public Television and quality, thought-provoking programs. I’m actually a bit astonished that HBO in your respective countries is pulling this, irregardless of what U.S. tv-ratings indicate, which should tell you that there’s more to this than just blaming someone. – Firefly
    – Farscape (at least they finish the season… and then made a mini-series to explain the end…)
    – Tru Calling (1 season and 6 episodes from season 2 and them, bum)
    – Point Pleasant (not even a season, no conclusion…)
    – The Inside (the same)
    – Stargate SG-1 (no comments… The Sci-Fi show that make more money EVER!)
    – Eureka (left us normally waiting for the next episode… that never come..)
    – Invasion (1 season, kind of a finish, but not really…)
    – Surface (no ending and with lots of plot choises)
    – Threshold (no ending and with lots of plot choises)
    – The O. C. (fourth and final season shorther and one of the tv series revelation is shut down…)

I guess the Sci-Fi fans are engaged on other affairs, because if you look at the list, about 70% or more of the shows are Sci-Fi… and… I love Sci-Fi!!!… Snif…

There’s gotta be more to consider then only the TV ratings…
The prodution companies also make tons of money after the cancellations, with re-runs, DVDs (ex: Fox is selling, Tru Calling, Point Pleasant, Firefly on 1 pack as complete series – never mind that’s a LIE!…)

I think that the one in charge of the desision are not qualifed people to make that decision, so they only look and the numbers…

And them you see all over the world, American Idol, Big Brothers, and lots of crap reallity show like thoose…

The only conclusion we can take is that the maioritty of the TV viewers are STUPID, so, the companies produce STUPID shows for the maiority to see.

I’m NOT STUPID! I LIKE QUALITY TV and stick American Idols and Big Brothers and that kinda of TV UP YOUR ASSES!

  130. Wow, there are hundreds of posts here and from what I can see not one person is happy with HBO for canceling Rome. There are also MANY people saying that they’re canceling their HBO subscription because they can’t watch Rome anymore. Not only that, but canceling it now is the worst thing they can do because it means Vorenus’ story had a horribly disappointing end to it.

This is the worst thing to happen to TV since survivor was first aired.

  131. You know, we do not know if Vorenus died for sure – they could say he gained the strength and heart to recover after receiving the love of his oldest daughter at his deathbed.

But you know you could have waited till Soppranos wasnt being aired and then aired the Rome show because maybe you would have gottne more viewers! well if you want to email me at the email address above, make sure you make the subject “Rome Petition”

Rome is the closest experience some people watching TV will come to actually learn something historical about the Roman empire. To bad HBO feels they have to cater to the masses that prefer mindless silly programming.

My ideas for season 3 For Rome, if they wanna produce more viewers and money, well lets start, i think they should also concentrate on a rising hero and soldier of Rome durin those times, and stayin true to the story, picking off from the last episode, it would make it more exciting to maybe take from the Epic Movie Gladiator (Best movie ever might i add), i think it would be more intrigueing to see more action, for i am a Rome fan and wanna see more

It had it all just look at Marc Anthony in it he,s a legend, and Polly Walker as Attia was amazing. Can,t beleive there will not be a 3rd season.Vorenus and Pullo should get there own mini series bout the 13th Legion in Gaul.I suppose it is really the end of the story but, if you know your history Octavian went on to do accomplish more and reorganise the Republic.

  142. Don’t have HBO, but stayed at a hotel one night and they had cable. Saw one show of Rome (last episode of season 1) and my husband and I were completely hooked. Bought a used copy of Season 1 on half.com and spent a great week watching a couple of episodes every night. my mother-in-law watched it with us and she was spellbound. I am REALLY depressed that there will be no Season 3. Oh well…I have yet to see Season 2, so I have that to look forward to.

If you haven’t seen it already, rent or buy ‘I, Claudius’. It is an old PBS series from the 70’s, but it is great. It starts out with Augustus (Octavian) as an older man and, of course, the well established ruler of Rome. The characters are also amazing in this series. You thought Atia was bad…wait til you meet Livia! You will be glued to the screen, even though there is a little age on the show.

I understand that 100 million dollars is a lot of cash, but at least try to make money back. Hold on for the long term.

  148. I absolutely loved both seasons of Rome. I was extra lucky to travel through europe, starting and ending the trip in Rome, after seeing the first season, and got back just as season 2 was starting. I was already checking into Augustus to see if that would be the direction the show would take, and looking into what Octavian did later in life for the same reasons. I’m very dissapointed there will be no season 3, but we may have been more dissapointed if there was. Lets face it, after Antony and Cleopatra, the amount of drama in roman history declines for a while. Vorenus is dead, and while Pullo is a fantastic character, I dont think following his story line is enough to make a 3rd season compare with the first 2, and picking up the story later in time means all new cast and characters. I would rather mourn this loss than bitch about how bad season 3 was, and have HBO lose a ton of cash instead of spending it on another great mini-series. Lets not forget they gave us Band of Brothers, and the Pacific theater version of it should be airing soon. They gave us the Sopranos as well, and personally I wish they cut the cord at 4 or 5 seasons there. Rewatching the entire series would’ve been much better if the show had been less successful, and they hadn’t added so many “filler” episodes to squeeze another golden egg out of their goose, David Chase. Rome, I will miss you, HBO, I forgive you…. but don’t let it happen again!!!

If you are lacking viewers HBO, I suggest that you allow people to purchase individual episodes online. My husband and I agree that we would even be willing to pay the $4 per episode(like renting a movie at Blockbuster) if we could just watch it at home. ( I do not want to pay for all of cable just to watch one show) This is the only show that we watch together and we love it. For those who havent seen it -this is a fresh look at Rome its rise and fall. The acting is great the scenery and costumes are awesome.
If the directors read this maybe they can have a change of heart after all the scenery has been made already as have the costumes -so future productions must come in cheaper.

I also wanted to post a small message regarding the Tv show Rome. I have to say that this is the best historical tv show i have ever seen. When i saw the second season i was even more amazed. I don’t understand why they won’t continue the series. Because of the low watching rate? All those people who didn’t watch it, well, i advise them to watch it because it is really wonderful. All my life i waited for a show which clearly shows the life of the Roman plebs and their difference with the rich patricians. Really i have to say to the creators of Rome that they have done a fantastic job. I thought that the next season would talk about the rebellion of the jews against their Roman masters at the time, when Rome destroyed the temple of solomon to put down any further resistance. Please don’t let all those hungry Rome watchers down and create a few more seasons, there is still sooooo much history to tell. Please, please, please i will be waiting for the next season.

If HBO was the center of the universe then everyone would know where to look.

Now if the premier season ended up with a 100 million U$ production costs (give or take) how much went to promoting the series?

If the spending were based on subscriber/wiever income to sustain the development of the series what the heck did the promoting agencies do with their funds?

If the majority of the aimed market is uaware of the upcoming production how can one expect to justify the spendings? I assume HBO werent expecting to go in balance but rather make a profit, so what happend?

The times have changed, it’s time to realise this, it doesnt take 80 days to go around the world no more and across that big pond you will find Europe, Asia, Africa and they are not 3 states in USA, trust me it’s true.

We were hooked on the Wire, but we quickly lost our connection with the wire when we saw the first Rome series. Money can’t be the issue they will get their money by selling the DVD disc series. Keep it going it will catch on to the public. I dropped HBO because the Rome series was over. I will quickly rejoin HBO if Rome 3 kicks off. Please, bring it back im begging.

Cable subscibers pays about 10-15 bucks a month. To account for the people who cancelled their HBO package because of Rome but did not sign the petition. I’ll say about 8-9 thousand people and counting cancelled their HBO because of Rome. It sounds like 150,000 thousand dollars per month and counting is what HBO is losing. I know some of the money goes else where but I think thats an honest assumption of what they will lose every month. Fix it HBO get ROME 3 on course before you lose more money. Kill all the other series save some money and get ROME 3 back on TV. Some idiot wrote that a ROME 3 would be a waste of time because of the strong plots on series 1 & 2. “Moron” Rome could use the same format Star Wars did and start the series from the beginning of the Roman epire and run it to the series we watched. Rome has many historical avenues they can take. Genghis Kahn was involved in Roman history even Jesus christ was in the Roman timeline “I would not get to involve in the religous aspect if I was HBO”. Anyways, we want ROME we want ROME we want ROME.

I think HBO did a terrible job with the advertisment, thats why they didnt receve enough viewers, and thats why rome is over. It makes me angry that some crap shows go on for 6 or 7 seasons, and a great show like this ends after only 2. I have wrote a lot of letters to hbo about bringing back rome for a final season, i would like to see 6 or 7 seasons, but i would be content with one final season. At the end of the day we the people will be herd, and maybe one day they will bring it back, if enough people write to hbo. It is possible we can win this, maybe we could send hbo money for the 3 season. If we all send them all something like £10,there could be enough money for a 3 season, i am willing to do this to bring back a truly remarkable show.

And the Dog, wagging his tail, which is I think, for these poor creatures, is the sign corresponding to smile and laughter, approached and curiously put its humid nose on the open flask, and suddenly stood back in terror, it barked against me blaming me.
Miserable dog, if I had offered you a pack of excrement, you would have smelled it with pleasure and perhaps even devoured it. It’s too bad that you feel it was too expensive and that the events past Augustus’s Triumph may be a bit dull in Italy but there was allot of action happening in Egypt , Gall and especially Judea to have filled in the gap. So I got on the net to find out when they would be starting. Now I find out that they ARE NOT going to be starting at all. I am so pissed, not only at the short life of both of these shows, but at the ridiculous ending of The Sopronos. I have had HBO for many many years, and I can honestly say that the ONLY reason for having it is for the spectacular shows that HBO has. But, now we are left with the likes of Big Love and John from Cincinatti. What the hell are their executives fucking thinking. I know what I am thinking,It is time to cancel my HBO!

Anyway HBO do the right thing and sort this silly series 3 issue and series 4 while your at it. Lusius isn’t dead yet, he’s just resting.
I must say the uk marketing this time was a bit pants.I suspect that many missed out on the first few episodes.

Congratulations to the script writers for a good work done. Some historical flaws but at large the best series about Rome since “I Claudius”. Shame that the viewers were not there, but if a bit more marketing is put in, I am convinced that it will do the trick for a potential Season 3. Then again, the ending of season 2 was actually quite good, so if you cannot come up with a good script for a sequel it would be better just to leave it in order to avoid being disappointed.

Rome was actually a joint venture by HBO with the BBC ( who I work for ), and was a true jewel in its television crown although shown on BBC 2. This was quality indeed and its a shame its over whereas the BBC ( here in UK ) put out more trash in the vein of Dance/Sing/Ice Skate/Bake a Cake Idol.

Nonethless Less commendations to its makers entirely, I hope the forthcoming Fire and Ice ( books I love ) takes more than a few leaves out of Rome’s book.

I got into watching way after it originally aired, but was hooked straight away. Luckily the second series was just about to start on BBC2, so i didn’t have too long to wait to get my next fix.

I saw the last episode the other night and was welling up at the end when Lucius was reunited with his family.

Since I’ve started to watch this series I see it everywhere…I can name 20 people that I know who own the series on DVD….
The second season is vertually impossible top rent as it is always off the shelf . Maybe HBO is not a popular enough network or perhaps the wrong forum.
The auther made refference to the series “Firefly”. And equally amazing series. That series was sci-fi (a far more limited audience potential then that of a series like Rome) genre and aired for only 10 episodes before it was cancelled. However, It became soooooo popular and spread to soooooo many people that a movie based on the series (called “Serenity”) was made(aprox. 4 years later)!! This has never been done before!
So you just never know….”Rome” season 3 may return. It will just take time for the HBO network, or some other network to recognize just how popular this series has become.

I bet that we haven’t seen the last of this series

I’m sorry to everyone who fell in love with this EPIC TALE and further more, sorry that of all channels, HBO once again showed its true colors, meaning it only cares about money, not its viewers. My only advice is that HBO swallows its pride by asking Bill Gates for another 100 million dollars to make another unforgettable tale, while asking its viewers for an apology it doesn’t deserve.

  227. I suspected Rome would not go on for further seasons even before i hopefully googled “rome season 3” ten minutes ago and found this ominous website. Surprisingly, that’s not because I have a long-harbored grudge against HBO for it’s propensity to go trigger happy on the cancel button “just when it was geting good.” The cease of the show was predictable because the story slowly came to resolve itself, and now all conflicts have been solved. There is no remaining story. Maybe Octavain goes on to expand Rome’s border’s a bit, but it is not a legend: we do not know it so well as the Caesar/Antony/Cleopatra saga. The awesomeness of Rome is enhanced by the fact that it is all fact-based, the plot is driven by things that actually happened. If Rome were to continue, more of it would be fabricated by writers and not dictated by history. And would perhaps begin to suck. If such a thing were possible!!! I shall miss you Rome.

However, when you sit back and look at it objectively, it was losing it’s appeal. The story lines were starting to get a little weak, and what made it so gritty and interesting in the beginning, slowly faded towards the end of the second season.
    Nothing will ever beat Deadwood.
Deadwood will most likely remain my all-time favorite TV show for many years to come. With its in your face style, realism, and superb story lines, it kept fans and myself interested in every episode.
It was HBO’s worst mistake to cancel that show, and since then, I canceled my HBO.
because of their stupid decision about Deadwood, I will never pay for HBO again and have since only downloaded HBO shows from the internet.

Didn’t expect a 3rd season (seeing as Octavian/Augustus establishes the Pax Romana after the fall of the Triumvirate…200 years of relative peace makes for bad tv, i guess). Can’t really say I’m mad because I deeply appreciate the fact that the show was made in the first place; a very risky endeavor on HBO’s part (after all, all these idiots want to watch nowadays is gratuitous violence and nudity without context). A third season would have been a treat, but I’m happy in the fact that someone finally produced a drama that attempts to depict the power, charisma, and complexity of my ancestors so bravely and accurately (sans Brit accents).

  243. Alright, let me just start off by saying that ROME is one of the most original drama series EVER created, this is the reason why it is on HBO. A responsive storyline like that towards viewers worldwide has to mean something, god dammit. At this very moment, I have this displeasing, loathing, and sad feeling in my stomach after learning that there will not be a Season 3. It is now 1:50 A.M. and I just finished season 2, bravo to another damn good season finale. Now, with all this excitement that I’ve built up, I jump on Yahoo.com and find out that, to be honest, my world has come crashing down. Sorry to sound so dramatic, but it’s true! Obviously, I’m not going to drive a sword into my stomach, but I can’t believe that the story stops there. It’s like going on a roller coaster and being let off right before the climactic drop! And like most people here, I don’t have HBO. I just purchased the entire saga last week for crying out loud! I am so displeased that there were problems with budget and ratings which lead to the show being canceled. Honestly, this show had potential. Well, it is what it is…the end. Although, I would curse everybody I know…just to get the show back, haha. Thank you HBO for that short thrill…bah!

PS: A new show was introduced last year called “Heroes” that first appeared at Comic-Con 06 in San Diego. The small cast and producers of the show were presenting to a crowd of few and didn’t think that it would make it pas a mini-series…NOW LOOK AT IT!

There is someone that can do a petition against this decision ?

However, I know many people who are switching their subscriptions to watch shows like The Tutors. It seems while the majority of America would like to watch mainstream television, there is a huge market for edgy/intellectual television. HBO should study their demographics better and certainly advertise their shows more heavily. I am at least happy to see that one of the main stars of the show will be starring in his own this coming season.

  250. by far the greatest ever series given to us on tv, i got hooked on rome the first time i ever put it on. the want to watch over and over to see what happen next. i enjoyed rome and loved it to pieces, HBO have made a complete massive mistake by cancelling the show. i believe that the show would of grown more and more and the writers would still be bringing us quality writing and the actors and actresses would still be bringing us excellent performances. destroyed would be an understatement. you have taken away from the people quality and quality is extremely hard to come by on tv to date. i am ashamed i even got hooked on the show and will never watch a HBO series again as fear for the disappointment of a show being cancelled. there must be something that can be done? HBO have brought shame on themselves. it is an educational show aslong as entertainment and i say BRING IT BACK!!

I didn’t watch Firefly either until someone had the DVD set.
Right now I’ve watched all but the last two episodes of Season 2. I don’t think they can wrap up the Mark Anthony story in two episodes.

Rome’s 22 full hours is a fair amount of content. Deadwood has gone on too long if you ask me.

This is indeed the best quality drama produced by HBO thus far. I have hopes that HBO will bring Rome back in the future.

I don’t watch too much TV but Rome is one of the best shows ever made. I would pay the monthly fee for HBO just to watch this show. Bastards.
I used to watch Carnival but just as that was getting good, HBO killed that show too. I stopped my HBO service a few days after and have never wanted to go back until Rome. HBO sucks and I will never get into anything they put on again, because you will NEVER have a conclusion to a story line because they will cancel it. Let me reiterate, bastards.

  257. I could not come to grips that HBO would cancel such action packed historically entertaiinig program such as ROME. Just goes to show that if the cost per episode ratio didnt fulfill the greasy hands of HBO exec’s enough then perhaps HBO should foregoe on priding themselves with the ever self promotion of providing quality programs. They should get into the BS world of reality TV because the likes of Survivor or Big Brother shall provide them with the ever increasing “bottom line requirments”. I used to repect HBO due to there willingness to provide me with what I call a “return on my investment”. But I guess our modern society doesn’t need Andy Warhol to place a mirror up to ourselves to realize that cheap crappy reality tv will produce the mind numing drabble that the majority of our tv viewers rather watch. Just as a small protest I have stopped buying any HBO produced show on DVD, and to those reality TV watchers keep getting dumber and maybe one day you might get a job writing there scripts for them.

#1 – it would not be the same without Vorenus – he was the man! Although the last episode does not shows his death it is implied, so no Vorenus, no Rome.

#2 – the only thing I did not like about the series and maybe one reason why it was not so popular was the vulgarity of the sex scenes. Sorry folks, but there was not need for so much of it. I think it killed a possible bid audience.

#3 – if you read history, after Octavian became emperor there was peace in the Roman Empire for a long while. No wars, only politics and more sex. Not so much fun. It would have been hard to keep it interesting.

Over all, it was a great series and I plan to buy the whole DVD set to watch over and over.

  271. Well, this does stink. No more Rome. Gone are all the shows I love. This is pretty much why I do not even get started on new shows. Do these networks take into account that people may not watch the shows right during the time slot they are put in (Tivo, Web, DVD, etc)? Nielsen Ratings are worthless now. TV Studios, Record Companies, Movie Studios, etc. are going to have to find ways to make money other than relying on the advertising during the time slot and relying on biased households who hold Nielsen boxes. Technology allows people to catch up on back episodes on the web, DVD sales should account for revenue, iTunes and other download sites as well. I think networks need to be less quick to pull the plug on great shows. Great shows that have gone in recent years.

    American Dreams
Jericho (yes I know it is coming back for 7 episodes)
    Studio 60
Commander in Chief (great until they went on 3 month break)
North Shore (don’t knock mindless entertainment, it wasn’t horrid)
    Rome
    Deadwood
Justice (Fox show, I think that was the name)
and probably 10 comedies that I am not able to remember.

In France, the only channel having Rome on its schedule was the too expensive paying channel Canal+ (who by the way spent 600 millions euros last year for first league french soccer). 282. I wouldn’t change a single thing about ‘Rome’. I loved the look, I loved the characters, I loved the scope.

Having said that, if some changes had to be made in order to move forward with the series, I suspect that most of us would have learned to cope.

As much as I loved the enormous set they built and the hundreds of extras that they used in so many shots, the fact is that this is not absolutely necessary to tell these kinds of stories. Again, I wouldn’t change the gritty realism of the show for anything, but given a choice between NO ‘Rome’, and a ‘Rome’ with more CGI shots, and less epic staging (and therefore a MUCH smaller budget)…well, I guess that’s a matter of personal opinion.

Food for thought: Do you know why Robert Rodriguez gets to keep making big studio movies despite a very mixed record at the box office? Look for his ‘Ten Minute Film School’. Whatever you think of his films, an approach like his could have saved ‘Rome’ (Not suggesting his involvement, just his business model).

A third series as a continuation of 1 and 2 would be uneventful, forced and ultimately disappointing. I do think it could continue but would have to shift to another time period. Personally I’d prefer either the Marius / Sulla civil war that preceded the events in Rome, or to shift it out of Rome and look at the wars of the Diadochi, the successors of Alexander.

So the story isnt done, alot of people are very interested in that particular Period in History, and in my personal Opinion, there is much to tell. Maybe HBO should put more effort into advertising their series on other forms of media. Yes they would have to pay for it, but they would see an increase in viewers overall. Which in turn would help to provide an extended lifeline to the quality of shows HBO produces. Personnally, the only reason I knew about these shows was because they sell the product to other channels.

  297. I think this email I recently sent to HBO will make them think….provided that they ACTUALLY READ the viewer emails. It goes something like this:

After looking into your reasons and track record, I find that your cancellation of Rome is completely unfounded. It is blatantly obvious that Rome has a strong support base in terms of fans and that the problem of finance is easily correctable.

I have discussed the pulling of the show with a good number of HBO subscribers, and it would appear that there is a lack of research on the part of HBO as well. As one of the most popular shows featured on your network, there is little reason for many people to subscribe to this network, myself being included. HBO has a track record of canceling well – scripted shows and pieces of quality work. From the number of people I have discussed this topic with, I believe that over the next little while, HBO will see quite the significant drop in its subscribers due to its lack of commitment to fulfill the desires of the paying customer, as this is not the first time that HBO has canceled popular and quality work.

It is my opinion that HBO should stop with these bait and drop practices, because in due time, I would not be surprised if the viewer cancellation rate plummets at this continued practice. Then Rome will be the least of your worries.

I know that these words will fall on deaf ears, as no broadcast network ever truly cares about the viewers, but only on whatever silver lining they can add to their pockets. I assume that I should expect that the next program with a viewer base on HBO shall be American Idol and Survivor?

What a sorry case that would be.

The second session, I ordered it online from Amazon, paid delivery fees and importation taxes, all that because I couldnt wait for my dear country to bring it here. That is it! What a world we live in ! Unfortunately money has dominated human’s mind.

The politics, battle scenes, emotion, sex and intriugue was intoxicating. I just bought series 1 and 2 and have been up all hours addicted to each show. I am so upset that we will not continue the journey. There is so much of history to unfold. The collisium, the impact of christ, Ceasers v the republic.. what we will miss out on seeing….For the love of ratings.. very disappointing.

  323. Thank the Gods! My brain was hurting from all that history and culture. I’m so glad HBO has the forsight to cancel such a thinking show like “Rome.” I don’t want to know if Vorenus is really alive and can find a place in his daughter’s heart again. Bah! With all the historical figures dead, save Octavian, we only have characters that are relateable and have limitless potenial to grow and evolve. You know what I need; about 5 more seasons of Sex and the City! Forget the movie coming out and just make more self-destructive, cliche-throwing, morally-depraved women feel validated. Oh wait, they’re already doing that with “Lipstick Jungle” and “Cashmere Mafia.” Well, my life is complete! Someone out there, please make a time machine to stop the cancellation of “Rome,” “Firefly” and about 15 other well-written, acted and filmed shows that have been cut down in there prime. Guess what, I don’t even have cable! Ha! Everyone out there, save yourself some stress and money and just buy the DVD’s. I can’t see how HBO ISN’T making money from DVD sales; some box sets are $100 plus! It’s worth it, trust me. Drop HBO and pick up a box set.

The constant twists and turns, and clever humour? I mean, come on, who can resist laughing when Pullo says innocently “Can I have some peaches?” While Cicero is about to get his neck cut open?

So I splurged and bought the DVD set for both Seasons I and II, before having even sampled it at all. OMG. On Jupiter’s Stone, I swear this is the best effing show EVER!! I loved every minute of it and can’t believe it didn’t have the viewership to justify a third season. HBO didn’t market it enough or properly, perhaps. And people prefer crap, at the moment. What ever the trouble, I hope that the tide turns for ROME in the future and we’re all blessed with a third season of historical drama and debauchery. History has never been so entertaining. Wish it’d been HBO and this group to tackle the Tudors. While Showtime’s attempt is entertaining, I’d much prefer all historical dramas be as committed to historical accuracy as ROME; it’s really set the bar and proven that history doesn’t need embellishment to be entertaining. Not in the least! So back to the matter at hand: WE WANT SEASON III!!! THE PEOPLE DEMAND IT!!!

We’ll keep having “drool” fed to us for years on end until the whole planet is so numbed out from watching mind numbing programs and we’ll totally turn into “coppertops” for the robotic arms of the “Secret Powers” to feed of off us.

This declension into stupor is a worldwide epidemic and it’s the educated few being force to watch at best mediocrity due to the, I fear to say it fact, that the human race isn’t intelligent as a whole and since the invention of television it has been the ‘plebes’ who rule and those of us with interests that go deeper than ‘is Britany Spears wearing knickers’ are to suffer.
Yet take solace in the fact that they can’t take back the two series!

ROME is an amazing interpretation of actual historic events put in a catchy soap opera feel, touching on so many levels of life then and covering so many intertwined plots!!! The portrail of life at the various social levels and the rawness, gore, sexual, betrail, themes and the complexity of expression and speech are just so inspiring. Other than Babylon 5, this was the second best show I have ever watched… too bad about that idiotic epidemic.. that will always select for the “Friends”-type of shows.

I live in Canada, and there is no HBO here, but I would get HBO simply for shows like that…. Such a pitty for such quality television to get lost.

An incredible series. A True master piece (depiction) of history on film. And as I’ve seen and intrepret, a reflection of times not soo different that current day, 2008. What have we learned as a human race, since then? Not Much, Money does decide events. This is merely one of them. A series down the tubes; because of money; surely the root of all evil. You writers are excellent, and depict stories on film, whom which, I think, the actors, due great respect!

I am truely, saddened, that this story can not continue, it is afterall, a great lesson for us, repeated, over and over again.

Can we as a human race not learn from them?

With great dissappointment, and utmost respect for U writers. And U network lords, looking after the “bottom line” as they did, not soo long ago.
    Think about it.

This truely reflects human nature. What a great way to show us, how we are, were, still, and still today as a race(human) have a hard-time learning from.
Lets not history repeat itself, like it has soo many times before.
Money, is not the meaning of life.
Human emotions, experience, love, friendship, and most of all truth in ourselves.

What doesn’t is not to atleast do a final episode and rap up the caracter stories that paying viewers have been following for two years. TV is too much full crap because the people are crapeaters they don’t care about all of the good things in life they just wanna go the opposite way. Its understandable that a show gets cut if it spends far, far more than it earns, but I was blissfully unaware of this series at all until I saw both seasons being sold at a local dept. store [for a rediculously higher price than most other series too]. If you really wanted to entice people to watch your channel, you should’ve simply syndicated the first season to whoever would take it and play it – generate interest in the series, then tighten your grip on season 2 onwards. Simply put: I, and most people I encounter, didn’t know this show existed until after it was finished.

Most shows cost half that price to own on DVD and you get twice as many episodes. I have a hard time believing that HBO is having budget problems. Fire the jackasses in charge of marketing and sales and that should cover the costs of funding a third season. HBO will never get my money…

  367. I just watched the last episode of Season 2 and was very impressed with what I saw. I was happy to see Caesar Augustus portrayed as the intelligent and great man he was instead of some fool who just happened to beat Mark Antony and Cleopatra at Actium with the support of his friend and general, Marcus Agrippa. I was also pleased to see that Octavian was not portrayed as a homosexual without any historical proof as Hollywood has done in the past to push their political agenda ( e.i “Alexander”). I immediately logged on the internet to do a search for when the season which would portray the magnificent reign of Augustus and the beginning of the Pax Romana would begin. I was dissapointed that the show has been cancelled.I am now sorry that I did not have the time to give this series my support when it was out (I did buy the seasons though). I do, however, seriously doubt that this is the end of the series. HBO has been trashing too many of their greatest shows lately (Sopranos, Carnivale, Sex and the City etc.) Sooner or later they will have to bring at least one show back which their audience is familiar with, or they might as well start all over again with a new station name. Listening to an ignorant, bleeding-heart liberal like Bill Maher whine will not be enough to save their station and “John Adams” has not done too well. What is more, their rival, Showtime, has produced another “docu-drama,” The Tudors, which has been an enormous success and filming has already started on the third season. HBO is going to need something to throw back at them and right now they don’t have it! We live so deep today in the duldrums of creativity that Hollywood is resurrecting movies and tv series that either went out decades ago (Indiana Jones, Rocky, Rambo) or recently suffered box office flops ( Star Trek: Nemesis and Batman & Robin). I have no doubt that the Star Trek franchise will recover when the next movie comes out next summer, and the TV series will also recover. With Showtime riding their tail with The Tudors, I don’t see any other option for Showtime except to pull something out of the recycle bin: Rome, as far as I can see, is as likely a candidate as any.

Untill now I am still amazed on how little recognition this excelent series had.
Well I take my hat off to the cast and crew of this great series.
It was the best one I have ever seen.

  390. As mentioned before I loved both seasons of Rome. After reading these posts I decided to give Deadwood a chance and am I ever happy I did so. What a fantastic series. (Super heavy swearing though lol) Not for children.

  391. I’m not an HBO subscriber; I actually purchased the DVDs from Amazon. This is the best series on Rome since “I, Claudius!” I would sincerely wish that HBO could find some other means of funding shows like this, that actually teach as well as entertain. At the same time, it looks like we’re going to get drowned in mediocre programming, since evidently anything else is too complicated for most HBO subscribers, and they are the ones, ultimately, that determine whether a series comes back or not. Cancellations like this, for the reasons HBO claims, are why I will NEVER subscribe. I work too hard to spend my money on crappy grade-B programming, while the best stuff gets canceled!

  392. I couldn’t agree more. The masses are mostly clones who like brain-dead BS. HBO should give these series more of chance. Most shows like these take a while to catch on and like a dead rock star they seem to become more in demand once they’re gone. Just look at The original Star Trek. Need I say more?

  394. I just found out that there will not be a season three. I am really unhappy, I work all day go to school in the afternoons and at night I like watching a good show. This is one of the best series I have watched in a really long time. I think this was a bad idea to cancell.

  395. Disappointing, Rome was the best Series ive ever seen. Great storyline, and Great acting. Its Rubbish they dont have enough funds to Produce another series. Perhaps in a couple years time they might come up with a Script…..

  399. I am so not suprised that both Rome and Deadwood have been cancelled, They are not mainsteam “REALITY SHOWS” that are so cheap to produce and make the networks SO much money with the hoopleheads just lapping them up. quality shows are expensive but the dvd sales alone must be huge. Until the public decides that survivor and big brother are worthless and american idol and dancing with celebs is at best bubble gum then all the shows that are worthwhile are going to be cancelled one by one.

  400. You must be American ’cause you’re forgetting that this series would’ve never been so good without the excellent work of the BBC. Without the BBC this would’ve been just another catastrofe like Deadwood where it starts promissing but after a couple of episodes yoy wonder where the fuck it’s going.

  401. WHAT?? Deadwood was awesome. Season 2 was hard to follow at times but season three was awesome. The BBC does put out some good stuff though. Jesus of Nazerth being one of the best mini series ever. That was also where I first saw Deadwood’s Ian McShane…he was Judas

    BTW I am Canadian.

We love he storyline and surprises, each and every week.

We also looked up historical facts after watching some episodes.

We would be very happy if a season 3 was produced,or more for that matter.
I did cancel my cable, hbo ect… for there is nothing but corporate trash anyways, telling you how to think, feel, and what to buy.thats why no commercial shows are great.
    please bring back Rome
    P.S. don’t forget vorenus

If you’re going to make blanket statements about the intelligence of an entire country, you should probably make sure you can spell “Americans” and “focused” first — after all, you wouldn’t want to look stupid, would you?

In any case, I agree with the other couple hundred posts here — HBO needs to bring this show back.

  406. This has been the best show I scene in a long time very good history lesson reminds us of how we got to where we are today. I thought that was the best TV show in years, little graphic but like I said it shows how the times really were. I can not believe that they are going to take this off the air I guess free up more time for some other stupid reality show! I think people can not deal with reality or the events that have happened in the past and just are happly living in their little fanasy worlds sometimes I wonder what is wrong with people in todays soc
